Avast won't let me update

I’ve had Avast Home running smoothly for quite awhile now. However, something happened to my system while installing a DVD+/-RW drive and my system clock was set to 2018. After fixing this, I realized that Avast wouldn’t let me update. Every time I try to update, it says “The license key for this product is invalid or expired.” (Under About Avast! it says that I have updated until October 1, 2005.) I’ve tried getting a new license key as well as uninstalling and reinstalling. Nothing seems to work.

Any ideas on how I can get Avast updating again?

Thanks,

Jason,

What happened was this. When you computer clock was reset to 2018, the “date coding” inside Avast told the program that the time limit for its’ use had expired.

Download a copy of AVClear here
http://www.avast.com/eng/download/programs/avast_uninstall_util.htm

to completely remove all remnants of Avast from your computer, then…

You will need to re-register, obtain a new key, and then install a new copy.
This should take care of the problem.

Good luck.

Are you using the DEMO license key? The DEMO license features a check that is trying to prevent tampering with the system time.

In other words, have you already registered your copy of avast?

Thanks
Vlk

Did you set the correct time/date in the bios or only in windows?

It looks like that was it. It updated just fine now. Thanks.

Jason, this is a tipical worm attack (change the system date/time).
I suggest you run a full scanning of avast 8)

Doing it now, thanks. Of course, I doubt it was a worm as it would have had to have gotten past my router, firewall, and Avast. And if it survived the reboot, it would have had to have gotten past Startup Monitor as well. Still, it doesn’t hurt to check.

Just finished a full system scan and it came up clean.
