Avast won't open

Hi,

i’m facing some weird issue with Avast Free Atnivirus for about a week. I was trying to open Avast, because i wanted to do minor file test, but when i was trying to open a program, nothing happend. After that i found in Task manager, that every time i try to open Avast (i tried to open it multiple times in a row) a new process in Task manager appear. After i while, there was like 12 processes named Avast Antivirus. None of thme did anything, except of using few MB o memory. I also find out, that when i try to test some folder with Avast, the File Explorer freezes. I hade to restart the computer, but after that, Avast started to work.

But today, it happened again, same problem, and same solution, but i don’t think it will help long-term.

I also repaired Avast by using uninstall feature, so i hope it could help.

So my question is: Do anyone know what could this problem be? After the restart, i also run scans and checked all settings. Everythink looks fine and test didn’t find anything, so i hope that is not some shady peice of malware.

Thanks for your help.

I have to admit to being confused as to what it is you are trying to achieve.

I was trying to open Avast, because i wanted to do minor file test, but when i was trying to open a program, nothing happend. After that i found in Task manager, that every time i try to open Avast (i tried to open it multiple times in a row) a new process in Task manager appear.

Why are you trying to open avast in this way ?
Avast should be running it should already be running as a resident antivirus.

What program are you trying to open and what test are you trying to perform ?
If you want to test a program file or executable, etc. if you right click that file in Windows Explorer and have avast scan it.

I’m trying to open user interface to perform smart scan.

As i wrote before, when i try to perform scan by right click on folder, Widnows Explorer freezes.

  • Which version/build of Avast Free…?
  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?
  • Avast Free Antivirus version 22.3.6008 - build 22.3.7108.720
    -Windows 11 Home 64bit, build 22000.613
  • Malwarebytes Free (passive) and McAfee (pre-installed, can’t get rit of it, also passive)
-On this PC i always used Avast as prime AV

I have encountered the same problem several times in the last 2 weeks or so (windows tuesday update?) with w10 21H2 and avast premium 22.3
(no problem with my 2 w7).
I have to restart the computer to open the UI (via the taskbar icon or the exe).
I have just tried and this time the UI does not open completely (hourglass endless).
The repair does not work. Change dns does not work.
I’ve also just seen that another user has just posted on the French side for apparently the same problem

edit:I don’t know if it’s related but the restart takes much longer than usual (about 2 minutes to close, 2 minutes to open and another minute for the avast icon to appear and tell me that I am protected)…This slowness dates back to when I first noticed the problem with opening the avast UI

Same issue happened to me a few times already. I was trying to launch Avast from either the Desktop Icon/Taskbar and it just did not launch. After restarting it seems to work, but it happened a few times already

Hi guys, let’s collect some logs for the devs…

  1. Enable debug logging (Menu > Settings > General > Troubleshooting > Enable debug logging) and reproduce the issue.
  2. Follow instructions: https://support.avast.com/article/33/ and post the File-ID or name of the Support-File here afterwards.

Dev-Info: On Friday, we released update for this. It should be enough to check the version of the client - there should be 22.3.7108.720 number - if so, just to be sure restart the machine and it should be ok. If not, we would need the support package.

I just had the same issue as reported on the thread. Clicking the Avast icon didn’t do anything for me. In the end I had to restart the computer and only after the restart did it open.

I’m on 22.3.7108.721 version. Win10 Pro, free Avast version.

After an update, it’s always advisable to restart the system.

With build 22.3.7108.720, it seems to be ok for me since Sunday .
Several switches to sleep mode have been made in the last 2 days without issue.

Hi Chris, thanks for the feedback.
