Avast won't run at startup

This probably has a simple solution. I have tried googling it but I have had no luck. Sorry to make a topic but I need some help.

I recently installed avast 4.8 home edition. The problem I am having is that it is not running at startup. There is no icon in the system tray. When I do open it up off of the desktop, the resident protection is disabled. So in order for me to have avast running, it has to be open at all times and can’t be minimized to the tray or anything.

I want the anti-virus to start up automatically. Any help?

I am using Online Armor as my firewall. I have ran the Norton’s removal tool and the avg removal tool.

Any help?

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

I tried both. I have now reinstalled it.

It is still not coming on at start up but it is at least giving me resident protection as the default when I do open up the Avast program.

I would still prefer it to show up in my system tray.

Any other advice?

  1. Check the option in the Appearance tab of settings.
    or
  2. Repair your avast installation through Control Panel.
    or
  3. Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder
    or
  4. Add the path to ashDisp.exe into a value named avast! in the Windows Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

I’ve forgotten, what other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc.?

hey i got this same error, i’ve already tried everything you said there and still no resident protection
i’ve these issues:
the ashdisp dont run with windows, no matter what i do, reinstalled avast 3 times and nothing!!! opening ashdisp through its core file don’t work too!!!

when i open the main program, the resident protection is on “disabled”, i turn it on, then it turns off automatically!!!

Avast dont show up as the anti virus program on windows Security central, i remember when i was adjusting my firewall to play online, avast was there, not anymore!!!

i got this issue since 2 weeks ago, i dont know if avast is the problem, but i think not, since no other AV was able to load (tested avira, AVG and mcafee, none worked too) but avast is the only one that still makes a scan, or even open its main window!!!

any help?

ashdisp is the icon, not the resident protection (ashserv.exe).

Two possibilities come on my mind:

1st, your computer is infected and prevents antivirus correct installation. You need to get clean with rescue cds.
Read the instructions, download and burn (maybe from another computer), finally use one of this rescue CD’s:

  1. Avira
  2. Kaspersky
  3. BitDefender
  4. F-Secure
  5. Dr. Web

2nd, remains of the other antivirus are messing the avast installation. I suggest specialized tools to get rid of them.
