running windows vista 32, disabled windows defender and un-installed pc tools
downloaded avast, installed, uninstalled, installed again, signed up, activated email (account) and it says I’m registered but avast won’t run and/or connect.
What was the PCTools you uninstalled ? Have you ran removal tools for previous security products installed before installing avast ?
What version of avast are you trying to install ?
Note that the connect account is not neccesary for avast to function ( registration is all that is needed ) its a service provided to monitor multiple avast accounts while online.
I would also suggest going into Safe Mode to check for remnants of PC Tools as it often leave pieces behind. Do a search and see if anything comes up and delete if it does. Clean your machine afterwards with something like CCleaner Slim version (no toolbars) http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds - scroll down.
Windows Defender you really do not need and it is a memory hog. But if you want to keep it, use it as on-demand.
The other information we need from you as previously asked is: what other security software do you currently use and did you use in the past on this machine (AV, firewall, trial versions, other security software)? How did you remove them - vendor’s uninstaller tool or some other way?
