Control Panel → Programs and Features (Add or Remove Programmes) → avast → Click on uninstall /Change ->Scroll down for the option of Repair .
And also make sure that you dont have any other security softwares in the computer. If you have any other security software, then you need to remove them using the specific removal tool for the vendor. You can download the removal tools from
What iYogi failed to mention is that those removal tools are not for uninstalling antivirus software, they are for removing the remnants that are leftover after a normal uninstall via remove programs.

FeAudrey if you have a problem caused by defender updating then that a different issue, Defender is useless anyway so if your on xp delet it and if your using vista-win7 then disable it and use Malwarebytes as your back up scanner.

I went to Control Panel/Programs and Features, and selected Avast. Then I selected “Change” (not “Repair”), and it downloaded a few items, including today’s update, restarted, and now works fine.
