Avast won't start following reboot - avLaunch "suspended" in task mgr

I am using Avast free 20.3.2405.
Yesterday I updated Windows 10 to version 2004.
Now, following a reboot I noticed that the Avast ICON was no in my task bar.
I clicked on my desktop icon, and all I got was a “spinning blue wheel”.
Research indicates “Avast AvLaunch Component” shows a status of “suspended” in TaskMgr.

I’ve uninstalled (in Safe Mode) and re-installed Avast a couple of times, always producing the same results.

Any Suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi,

Please search for and open the services app in Win10 and locate Avast Antivirus.
Make sure the “Status” is “Running” and “Startup Type” is "Automatic

I reinstalled Avast.

Following reinstall, but before a reboot, TaskMgr shows the followingAvast processes:
Avast Antivirus - 2 instances
Avast Antivirus engine server
Avast remediation exe
Avast Service
Avast Software Analyzer

Following Reboot, TaskMgr shows the following Avast processes:
Avast antivirus engine server
Avast AvLaunch component - suspended
Avast remediation exe
Avast Service
Avast Software Analyzer

Following reboot, Services shows:
Avast Antivius - running - automatic
AvastWscReporter - running - automatic

It looks as though your design is that AvLaunch will start all of the components,
but following reboot, it is NOT restarting “Avast Antivirus”, which I’d guess is your
UserInterface… since clicking on the Avast icon on the desktop does nothing.

Hi,

  1. If you go C:\Program Files\Avast Software\Avast do you see AvLaunch.exe?

  2. In Task Manager >Startup do you see Avast AV Launch component and is it “Enabled” or “Disabled”

  3. Also, make sure Avast anti-virus is turned on please go to Windows Security> Virus & Threat protection> Manage Providers> Security Providers > next turn on
    Avast anti-virus

Per your questions:

  1. If you go C:\Program Files\Avast Software\Avast do you see AvLaunch.exe?
    Yes

  2. In Task Manager >Startup do you see Avast AV Launch component and is it “Enabled” or “Disabled”
starup section of TaskMgr shows Avast AvLaunch Component “enabled”

  3. Also, make sure Avast anti-virus is turned on please go to Windows Security> Virus & Threat protection> Manage Providers> Security Providers > next turn on Avast anti-virus
    It says:
    Avast Antivirus
    Avast Antivirus is turned on
    Current Threats
    No Actions Needed
    Protection Settings
    No Actions Needed
    Protection Updates
    No Actions Needed

    Open App

Clicking on “open app” just starts the spinning blue wheel…
…nothing starts

Additional info.

It now seems that there are TWO “Avast remediation exe” running,
one is “suspended”

And the beat goes on.
Here is the current TaskMgr status of Avast processes:

Avast Antivirus engine server
Avast Antivirus Installer - suspended
Avast AvLaunch component - suspended
Avast Overseer
Avast remediation exe - suspended
Avast remediation exe
Avast service
Avast software analyzer

Hopefully this is giving someone some clues as to the problem.

I have the same problem

Update to the latest version (20.4.2410): https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=234638.0

I just Uninstalled Avast (in Safe mode), and went back to Avast site to download again.

The version that was installed is Avast Free Antivirus 20.4.2410

It is exhibiting the same symptoms…i.e. Avast AvLaunch component is Suspended,
but other Avast programs (Avast Antivirus engine server, Avast remediation exe,
Avast Servicee, and Avast Software Analyzer) are NOT suspended.

C:\Program Files\Avast Software\Avast\AvLaunch.exe exists (File size: 108,136 bytes)

According to TaskMgr/Startup Avast AvLaunch component is “Enabled”
According to TaskMgr/Services Avast! Antivirus and AvastWscReporter are both running

  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

On this laptop I previously ran MalwareBytes and Avast…

MalwareBytes was run “on demand”, I.e. not constantly monitoring,
And avast was constantly monitor.

I ran this way for years with no problems.

When this problem occurred, I uninstalled MalwareBytes, rebooted,
and reinstalled Avast. The problem did not change.

Does Avast write any logs or write any events that could be of help?

Does windows 10 write any “events” when it suspends a process?

As an update, following the install of version 20.4.2410 and reboot, and Avast AvLaunch component being put into suspended mode…

Now, both AvLaunch as well as “Avast Antivirus Installer” are “suspended”…

And of course, there is no Avast Icon in the task bar.

Follow instructions: https://support.avast.com/article/33/ and post the name of the Support-File here afterwards.

updated and launch icon on taskbar and secure browser still suspended. It also effect Microsoft onedrive icon from appearing.

The “File ID:” 3UV0B

The Filename (on my computer) is:
C:\Users\Tony\AppData\Local\AvastSupport\20200605_0409_3UV0B_2767232459.zip

Hi,

The fix should be released in the next beta version.

Thats good news…
Thanks.

Is there an approximate ETA…???

This problem is caused by conflict with Zemana AntiLogger/AntiMalware. Zemana seems to intercept normal process creation flow using method, which is not compatible with Avast self-defense. Microupdate for 20.4 version will be released.

The incompatible Zemana’s driver is C:\Windows\System32\driversantilog64.sys. This driver is not correctly uninstalled with Zemana’s uninstaller so it stays in system even after uninstallation of Zemana’s product. It must be removed manually.
You can check for presence of this driver in your system by executing in elevated console:

sc.exe query antilog32

SERVICE_NAME: antilog32
TYPE : 1 KERNEL_DRIVER
STATE : 4 RUNNING
(STOPPABLE, NOT_PAUSABLE, IGNORES_SHUTDOWN)
WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
CHECKPOINT : 0x0
WAIT_HINT : 0x0

You can remove this driver manually by executing:

sc.exe delete antilog32
[SC] DeleteService SUCCESS

After deletion of the antilog32 driver service and reboot, you can also delete the driver file:

del c:\Windows\System32\drivers\antilog64.sys

I followed the detailed instructions @Spec8472 gave, then rebooted, re-installed Avast, ran the first scan, then rebooted.

Everything worked as it should… NO SUSPENDED Avast processes, and the Avast is in the task bar.

Thank you for solving the problem.
