My avast won’t update at all , as when i click on the option nothing happens. The registration is not set and i don’t know where to get one.
The pc is slow and when I couldn’t remove avast from control settings, and I couldn’t download another free copy and reload as that failed to do anything.
What is happening here?
Adaaware also failed to be updated as that failed.
Help I thing the pc (not mine) is in bad shape virus wise.
Do you have a firewall installed on the computer? Have you checked the firewalls log for more info about the problem?
I think it might be malaware as it sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t. It is too slow .
What errors are you getting when you try to update ?
If it were malware then surely it would be every time not sometimes. When does the error happen, directly or very shortly after boot ?
Are you able to do a manual update ?
Check the contents of the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\setup.log file (use a text editor) look at the bottom of the file the last 50 lines or so is there anything listed as a possible cause ?
Also check the contents of the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\setup.log file.
Which is your operational system?
Which firewall do you use?
Can you find a process called avast.setup running in your computer while you’re updating?
Did you have any other antivirus in this computer in the past?

I have got winxp, sysgate firewall, and NO avast.setup running in your computer while you’re updating.
My PC has not had other virus software on it ony avast.
The avast kept coming up with erros a while ago on startup with red box saying error with updating etc but now it has gone bad.
It is happeneing all the time and this has become critical, as the pc is way too slow to use with internet.
My PC works fine and is connected by wireless to the slow pc and no hardware is out of place or jas been changed…
The log file mentioned has a lot of invalidcurrent … and returned package
Problem solved!
The firewall was not there. It had been removed somehow and i have no idea how?
Loaded a new 1 and now it works fine.
The firewall (sygate uninstalled) or the program (avast.setup) into the firewall settings?
The firewall was partially uninstalled somehow?
The icon/desktop were removed and i have no idea what was running and i didn’t notice it.
Now it all works when i reintalled the firewall.
