Does the avast setup~email scanner service~anti virus service need server rights in ZA free edition?.
R.B.: I use Yahoo! which is server based, so I do not need the e-mail scanner service. You did not state what e-mail service you have so I will give a general answer here.
About once per week I open up ZoneAlarm to the Program Control screen and change any services I don’t recognize from “allow” to “ask”. If the service is needed, I will get a pop-up screen telling me to allow it. You will quickly find out if you need it or not that way.
Caveat: My Logitech digital mouse keeps wanting to call home. I have checked the “block” option, and now I have to manually “OK” the mouse settings everytime I start up. Some programs include “tags” like this to try to get you to allow their service. You can decide which services you really need over time.
If you want a more technical answer, I’m sure someone will be along shortly with one. On your next post please include your operating system, and what email service you are using so you can get a more detailed answer.
Oh, welcome to the forum. You will enjoy being here. We are a pretty good bunch of folks.

Yes,Internet Mail provider with module ashMaiSv.exe requires server rights in ZA. This module is a proxy scanner for incoming and outgoing mails,so basically it will act like a server.
Just a general idea for all users with a firewall. It is a good thing to remove every application/service from the list in the firewall settings once in a while. To make sure there are no things there that have permission while they are not on the system anymore/not needed to have eprmission.
Thank You for the quick responses. I have let the avast email scanner service full server rights. I see it is using a loop at 127.0.0.1 on ports 25,110 and 143 which makes sense because it is using my local system ip. I switched from AntiVir because of numerous reasons. I’m impressed so far with this program! It is a very nice program. FYI the email exe scanner module did not ask for server rights.

R.B., I use AntiVir as a backup (second, non-resident) antivirus and I can’t see advantages against avast! :-\
Technical,
I use A2,Edwido,XCleaner and SwatIt as backups among 8 gigs of other security programs that I have accumulated over the years. AntiVir does not have any advantages as far as I can see. I have used Norton Anti virus Pro in which the common client core never installed properly on my machine and it was to processor intensive;not to mention the support also left something to be desired (India). Grisofts Anti Virus was OK but the server updates were bothersome meaning the server was a problem for them for awhile. AntiVir detected an old .ssmzip file in my backups. This was a setup program for System Security Monitor and the program monitors dll’s. The setup program inserts a root hook in the system processes and when I emailed the program file to AntiVir they decided to include it as a Trojan. I understand where they are coming from but disagree. I wanted a Anti virus program that was not to processor intensive, scans email, quick updater and has good virus detection. Avast was the leader in the free category on tests done in August so I thought I would give it a try. So far it has been a good experience.

avast! has something that no other antivirus programs have… avast! has free technical support 24/7, programmers that also are our best freinds in these forums, greatest bunch of forum members, avast! has skins (hehe) which other antiviruses don’t have… and sugar at the end, avast! has a soul !
Welcome to forums R.B. !
Cheers !
has free technical support 24/7Others have that also. But their response time is usually longer.
For freeware version ? I don’t know about that one… :-\
A2: too many false positives, very hard to update.
Edwido does not work well for me, again the false positives, interaction with other programs.
SwatIt I never used :
AntiVir, like you said, does not have any advantages over avast.
NAV: seldom installed properly, never uninstall, processor intensive, unbelivable support.
AVG: not support for free version, only in English, terrible updates. Easy and good with emails. That avast could do better
System Security Monitor works well to that ones who does not install too many applications for test…
So, we got it!
I could not say it better 8)
