Am at my wits-end and would so appreciate some help, please.
First off could not receive or send mail. Tried to append that little double hash (that # sign thingy) but it did not work. Maybe I was putting it in the wrong place. As a last resort, I disabled protection in the wizard and so now my email is working, thankfully. Strangely, when I checked back to the wizard tho’, the protection was checked back in. I’m in such a fog with avast til I learn how it works and am not that techy neither. It seems like a super program, if you know what your doing. :’ (My ISP tech said that I have to get rid of Avast!!!)
Anyway, my next problem is I cannot update avast. It says it cannot connect to server. Am using Sygate free firewall (which am not too familiar with yet either).
Is this an Avast config. or the firewall? Please help - haven’t had an update since install a month ago. Thanks.
I used to use Sygate, but as it didn’t support local proxy connections it had a few issues with Avast updating, email & web guard. Lots written about it at the time 2004/5, if you search these forums, including a couple of guides and work arounds
Although I found Sygate was ideal until Avast 4.5, after the intoduction of the web guard I didn’t much like the fact that outgoing connections to the Net were routed through Avast not the Firewall. For the record I uninstalled Sygate for Kerio 4, which I found easy to use, but unfortunately the lastest version 4.6 no longer supports Windows ME.
If you want to go back to Sygate that you are comfortable with there is a way round auto use of the web shield proxy.
How to disable transparent web shield proxy and allow only those browsers you want use it:
In avast! go to Web Shield provider, Customize…, Basic tab, blank the redirected HTTP port field (remove the 80).
Use Start Menu > All programs > avast antivirus > Mail Protection Wizard to configure your email accounts to be scanned by avast.
Then try to receive/send email. Sygate should ask you for permission to connect by ashMaiSv.exe.
Invoke a manual update (program or virus database) and Sygate should ask you the permission.
i try to desinstal (sorry for my bad english :() but it dind’t desinstal everything , so i try aswclear it dind’t work theres a erreur so a try to reinstalle it but then to, it dosn’t work wath can i do because im stock with this and my new anti virus dosn’t work propely
can enyone help
thank
Roxane
Roxane, which other antivirus program is installed in this computer?
Is there any other in the past?
Maybe you should remove them before trying to uninstall avast.
The avast uninstall tool can be run again after that.
Use Start Menu > All programs > avast antivirus > Mail Protection Wizard to configure your email accounts to be scanned by avast.
Then try to receive/send email. Sygate should ask you for permission to connect by ashMaiSv.exe.
In the Mail Protection Wizard there are no options from the drop down arrow for smtp & pop3 servers except shawmail.wp.shawcable.net. Is this where that double hash should be inserted? If so, could you please point out exactly where it should be inserted? OR what
should be put here?
Invoke a manual update (program or virus database) and Sygate should ask you the permission.
I’ve tried to invoke an update, both from iavs and program updates and have never gotten an alert from Sygate asking permission, only a message that it can’t connect to server.
Thank you for your patience.
DavidR:
Thanks for your advice. I know absolutely nothing about proxies. Is this necessary so that Avast works properly? Might setting up a proxy creates glitches elsewhere? My God, I’ve got enough problems right now, without creating more.
Because you are using an old OS the web shield proxy doesn’t work transparently and you have to manually set the browser to use the avast web shield proxy (you don’t have to do this with, winNT, Win2k, winXP or Vista).
You had the added complication if you want to use Sygate again and as you are aware it doesn’t do localhost loopback well. Thought this problem would be slightly negated because you are using an old OS that doesn’t transparently support the web shield proxy, so other applications couldn’t use the proxy to bypass the firewall and would be challenged by Sygate.
So having an old operating system with sygate wouldn’t be as insecure as with a newer OS, but you would still have to manually set the browser to use the web shield proxy regardles of what firewall you end up with…
It appears that so long as I am using Windows ME and Avast I will have that shield glitch with any firewall as you mentioned.
I have to go out of town for about a week but when I get back I think maybe I should uninstall both Avast & Sygate and get an older AV and one of the firewalls that rdmaloyjr recommended.
I plan to upgrade this fall and just wanted something to carry me through the interim.
I sincerely thank everyone for their advice and patience.
Sorry if the last line of my post gave you guys the impression that I was running Windows ME, my intention was only to stop Cim from downloading the lastest version of Kerio which I knew would not work for him. For the record I am currently using XP behind a Netgear 834 Router firewall & NAT enabled, but still suffering enough paranoia to run Sunbelt Kerio 4.6 to monitor outgoing connections, thanks anyway guys ;D
Cim, honestly David has given you the best advice on how to get Sygate to work with Avast, sometimes these things take a little bit of an effort to sort out, but IMHO from experience of other free (and some paid) antivirus programs you will be better off staying with Avast.
Just thought, I wonder if this link to Wilder’s might be useful to you http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=24415 There is a lot of information about how Firewalls work and how to set them up, also a list of the free versions available
I would question your decision to uninstall avast in favour of an older AV (never a good idea). That old AV won’t protect you as well as avast, which is more than able to work with your OS.
That old AV will most certainly not have any web protection, so if that is your reason/concern, just disable the web shield in avast and you don’t have to set-up any proxy (it is no glitch), though it is a piece of cake if you follow the on-line tutorials.
