Avast4 doesn't automatically update virus database

Hi…

since a few weeks, it seems that my (free registered) avast4 doesn’t automatically
update the virus database. This option is of course still selected in properties but I need
to do it manually.

I tried to search for such similar problem on this forum, but without any success.
Is someone already heard about such an issue ?

FYI, I use XP Home.

Thanks.

Hi,

do/did you have a firewall installed ?
maybe it’s blocking avast’s updater ? look in its ruleset

how do you connect to the net ?

Yes, I use Kerio as firewall.

Nothing special about my rules for avast.
In addition, when I perform a manual update my firewall doesn’t warn
about it (it doesn’t ask for outcome link confirmation) so I think the problem
is probably not here.

What are the rules/events avast use to decide to perform a check for update ?

Sorry, I miss a part of your question. I use ADSL as Internet access.

Hi,

avast.setup (temporarily created) has to have outbound access (imho TCP out) to avast servers; see program help and FAQ on main page for details:
do you use kerio 2.x or 4.x ?

also read here:
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=1647
and check relevant settings in avast4.ini

P.S.: did you try a repair or reinstall of avast ? (via control panel → avast → uninstal)

I use kerio 4.x, and I already try to uninstall avast! to clean it.

To re-install it I’ve downloaded the last version but I used the key
that were provided to me for previous version. I guess it’s not
a problem ???

I have compared my config file with the description provided in the link
you have sent.

Two parameters are missing in my file:
UpdatePeriod and AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds from [InetWD] section.

I’ve added them as I don’t know what are the corresponding default value.

The problem with this, it’s that I need to wait for virus database updade
to test the solution. It’s not very convenient.

With previously described modifications, the automatic VPS update
works fine. ;D

Many thanks whocares.
