avast4 or avast5

There were 2 avasts on my computer.

First, one was installed by my friend on 7th afternoon.
Then, second was installed by a computer man on 7th evening.

Both the avasts are uninstalled now with only remaining files. I still have two avast folders in the alwil folder and there are few files for each avast in them. How do i check from the remaining files that which avast they were… free antivirus or pro antivirus or internetsecurity.

I will answer your question in a moment, but do you eventually want to have an Avast product on your machine? If so, which product do you want (Free, Pro, AIS)?

I think i would go for free. But if the left over files indicate that they were pro or internet security and if i can recover it then ill go for that.

In order to get rid of those other files from the other programs, you will need to do the following:

Uninstall Avast again and do a CLEAN install –

  1. Save a copy of newest version of Avast (5.0.677) for the version you need and save it to your HDD:
    Freehttp://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free_eng.exe - (English only)
    Freehttp://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe - (multi-language version)
  2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.0 and 5.0). You will need to uninstall 5.0, AIS, and if you used 4.0 in the past 4.0 as well.
  3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
  4. Boot into Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.
  5. Reboot twice.
  6. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot.
  7. Get Internet access and update Avast definitions.
  8. Register your copy or add the license key for Free.

Let me know if you have any questions or problems. Thank you.

If i uninstall then i will not be able to know which avast it was (free/pro/internet-securty). Thats why i wanted to know how to check from the remaining files. Once i get to know, i wont have a problem uninstalling.

You won’t know which files they were remaining…not unless you are one of the Avast developers. And you won’t be able to reinstall the Avast Free until you have remnants off your machine or there will be conflicts and the new version will not work properly. So you need to start from scratch and uninstall and do a clean install.
