Avast7 stalls on Welcome screen. Windows Vista SP2, on Dell Vostro 220 2 GB ram,

Windows Vista SP2, on Dell Vostro 220 2 GB ram, stalls on Welcome Screen after I’ve updated Avast 7 through the Windows Install/Uninstall utility. In msconfig, the only application in startup and avast service is the only service enabled in addition to all the Microsoft services.

I have to shutdown via the Dell Power Button. I turn on the power and enter safe mode. In the msconfig utility I disable all services except for the microsoft services. All startup applications are disabled. A restart then proceeds normally to the desktop.

When I try to start Avast, the error message about the avast service is stopped appears. When I try to start the avast service in msconfig, I get access denied.

Appreciate any suggestions.

  • Which avast!..?? (Free/Pro/IS)
  • Which version…??
  • Other security related software installed…??
  • Which AV did you use before avast!..??

Avast 7 Free. I’ve been using Avast for 5 years. The machine came with Norton but I never installed nor uninstalled Norton.

First, be sure to get rid of all remnants of your prior installed AVs.

  1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

Couldn’t find any antivirus exceipt Avast Free. Applied uninstaller successfully and restarted successfully.
Installed successfully. On restart, the computer took about ten minutes on the shutdown screen but did shutdown.
Startup and login successful and have the Avast Ball in my systems tray.

Thanks, much appreciated.

You’re welcome.
