Avastclear restarts Windows 10 asking for "password"

I am running Windows 10 on a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 tablet.

I uninstalled Avast, rebooted and then ran Avastclear.exe to ensure that the system was clean.

Avastclear wanted to be run in Safe Mode and asked me if it was OK to reboot in Safe Mode and I said Yes.

After reboot, the login screen is asking for my “password”. This is unusual for me since I am using a PIN to sign in. I am using my Live.com account, not a local account, so there is of course a Live.com password but this didn’t work. It seems Avast is rebooting into some kind of local mode that I don’t know how to use.

How do I proceed?

Have you tried rebooting again :-\

avastclear just let the system boot in safemode, it doesn’t use a password.
You will need to enter the Windows pin/password.
Could be the administrator password that was set when installing Windows.

Craig, rebooting again just brings back the same login screen. I had to shift-Restart, then manually select the normal Windows 10 boot and not the Avastclear boot.

Eddy, sorry, I cannot remember ever being asked to enable the local account or provide a password. If I had, there is only one password to choose from and that didn’t work. It is my impression that Windows 10 only wants to use passwords when there is a domain server. For home users it relies on the Live.com account, PIN and of course the various options of Hello.

If this happens to you, you will have a choice between two systems to load each time you restart your computer. One is your normal Windows 10 and the other the Avast Clear Uninstall that won’t work because you logon with your online live.com account and don’t use a local user account.

If you don’t know how to remove the Avast option you should google remove windows boot option and follow the instructions you get. My first choice was msconfig but it didn’t work for me even when run as administrator. My second choice was bcdedit which worked.

After you reboot, you may want to ensure that subsequent reboots are set to run in Normal mode without limitations.
