I couldn’t install avast; I got a message saying The stub cannot run installer, and when I searched online I found instructions to use avast clear on safe mode, but I got the same message, so I’m at a loss for what to do.
What Operating system ??? What other security programs are installed ???
It’s windows 10, and the only other protection is windows defender.
How to Successfully Install Avast http://goo.gl/VLXde
The only thing different about the instruction you sent me is that I have to uninstall the present anti-virus that I have, but I’m not sure I can uninstall windows defender.
If it’s worth anything, I don’t have anything on this computer because I just reset windows on it.
Windows Defender is the exception to the rule. It doesn’t need to be removed. (If that were possible) Defender auto shuts down
whenever a third party AV is installed. Since you installed Avast and it failed, I’d still use the Avast removal tool to make sure nothing remains
and then do a fresh install using the full installer.
That’s exactly what I’m having trouble with. Wether it’s on normal startup or safe mode, I get the message saying that the stub cannot run installer, so I can’t completely uninstall avast.
I’ve referred this to Avast. Since this in the middle of the night on a Fri. don’t expect any quick responses.
You could try one more thing that at this point really shouldn’t hurt anything.
Do a fresh install of Avast. Get the Offline Installer from here: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=223244.0
If the installation works, be sure to restart the system after installation and report back.
Ok, so apparently the problem was in the offline installer.
When I tried the online installer it worked. Thanks for the help.
Just saying, usually an issue with an avast install is about the online (stub) installer, and the full offline installer fixes things, and not the other way around.
I’m somewhat confused by this (easily done I know), but the Stub Installer is the on-line installer, it is only 6MB (or so) and requires that you are on-line in order for it to download the avast components.
The off-line installer is the complete installation file at 295MB in size, for earlier Operating System versions (that shouldn’t effect Windows 10) you still need to be connected, but it is still termed the off-line installation file.
