AvastSvc.exe using 70%+ CPU

Hello everyone!

I’m starting to have a problem with avast. Every day I have to reboot my pc due AvastSvc.exe is using 70%+ CPU, so my pc becomes unusable. Even if I stop everything I’m doing.
I also tried to disable the shields etc. With no succes.

Some info:
Version: Avast IS 6.0.1289
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate SP1

The last time it was using 70%+ CPU, I dumped to process.
Its 200MB+

If you want I could upload the dump file.

Thanks,
Matthias B.

Well, I cannot be sure they would want the dump.
But, if so, you can upload it here ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming

Why not, we can check what thread is using the CPU.
But - are you sure about the version 6.0.1289? It looks like 6.0.1000 to me…

Yes I’m sure about it.

But I was googling the problem and I found a other thread where somebody had the same problem as me. And someone advised him to look what file was being scanned by the Shields so

My filesystem shield is scanning a file for more then 30 min a this moment:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\MSS.chk

So I scanned it. And I found something in the scanner that I’ve never seen before. There is a screensaver scan running. Maybe because a update but could someone verify its okay.

Thanks,
Matthias B.

I suggest invoking a repair of avast! anyway (Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs / avast! Antivirus / Change/Remove / Repair) - and rebooting the computer afterwards. The versions of the program files are strange, as if they were not updated.

When you say the filesystem shield is scanning a file for more than 30 minutes - does it mean the last scanned file shows the mentioned path, and the scan count keeps on incrementing during the whole 30 minutes?

Yes the scanned files are going up but the last scanned file stays the same.

Have you changed any settings of the File System Shield?
Isn’t there e.g. “Scan all files” checked on the page File System Shield / Expert Settings / Scan when writing?

Well uhm lets say I checked everything in every expert setting.

No big surprise then.

Could you tell me wich ones I would turn off. So I have a balance between good protection and pc speed?

Thanks,
Matthias B.

The default settings are well balanced.

See picture below for where to reset defaults

Why are you not using the lates avast! Version 6.0.1367 ???

That’s not the main point. Whether using 1367 or 1289, the report is showing an older one. That’s why it is being recommended to perform a repair of avast and reboot.

Uhm yea I updated it. And set shields to default back.
But problem still persists.

I found the problem my self but I’m just wondering if there is any way to stop it?

When my avastsvc gets a high cpu. I just need to perform a scan at a file then I can stop my screensaver. Wich starts to do a scan without me knowing. Like showing in the previouse pictures. It’s just scanning…

Thanks Matthias B.

Are the new reports still saying you are using an old version?

In such case, I would recommend a backup of the license file, uninstall, removal utility under Windows Safe Mode, manual search of “alwil*” and “avast*” folders so to delete them and clean install of latest stable version.

They are not. But is it normal that the screensaver doesn’t stop scanning when pc comes out of screensaver mode.

Well when I’m away the screensaver pops up with avast screensaver → then pc goes into hibernating → I wake it up and the screensaver stops but when I do a scan of a file it didn’t stop like shown in previouse pic?

Normal?

Thanks;
Matthias B.
