AvastVBoxSVC.exe using a lot of memory

I was browsing the internet while i suddenly got a warning about memory usage. A few minutes later Windows closed all my programs. I got into Process Explorer with Ctrl+Alt+Delete. I noticed AvastVBoxSVC.exe was using 28.303.920 K Private bytes and 11.426.776 K Working set. I took a screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/DggcvNi.png
Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Can i disable avast virtualbox? Im using avast free 2015.10.0.2208.

This particular file is part of the avast NG (Next/New Generation) scanning technology - used to run suspect file/s in a virtual environment to determine what it does and if that would be considered malicious.

The only way to disable it would be to uninstall the avast NG function, Control Panel > Programs and Features > Avast Antivirus > Change - in the new window find the Tools section and uncheck the avast NG element.

I don’t know what you were doing at the time but it sounds like the avast NG was analysing a file in the virtual environment.

How much RAM do you have on this system ?

Thanks for reply,

I tried uninstalling avast ng using control panel. I unchecked NG in the setup box and rebooted my system but AvastVBoxSVC.exe is still running and all the files are still there (located in C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\ng). I might try to reinstall avast. Im using 8gb of ram.

I just wanted to add that I have had EXACTLY the same issue

8GB Ram - all ram used, machine slowed to a crawl - but not showing anything more than 100MB for any process in task manager

Uninstalled AVAST machine went back to normal

Now follow that up by doing a new install of Avast but unchecking NG during the install process.

Hi,

there is no reason for AvastVBoxSvc.exe to allocate so much memory, so it must be a memory leak. Is the situation repeatable? if so, can you please provide memory dump of AvastVBoxSvc.exe? You have to disable Avast self protection temporarily to create a dump of AvastVBoxSvc.exe.

Thanks

I have a very beefy system with 24Gb of RAM, after a reboot yesterday, AvastVBoxSVC.exe was using over 15Gb. I had to change permissions, but a dump would be too big to upload. You need to figure out why it’s increasing in size until the system becomes unstable.

Can you please compress the dump? (e.g. 7Zip), I think it’d be very small. Or you can create a dump when it reaches over 2Gb (there will be enough information to find a culprit).
When it’ll be compressed, you can upload it on our ftp (https://sites.google.com/site/spg20scottsweb/home/tutorials/how-to-upload-to-avast-ftp)
Thank you very much !!!

My PC is also humming violently with AvastVBoxSVC.exe using lots of memory and CPU percentage.

I could send additional information if desired.
Please specify:

  • what I should supply,
  • how I should collect it,
  • and how you want it to be sent to Avast.

When you observe abnormal CPU usage (or high memory usage), run process explorer, find avastvboxsvc.exe process, right click, create dump (full dump). Compress this file with 7z (http://www.7-zip.org/) and upload it on our FTP (https://sites.google.com/site/spg20scottsweb/home/tutorials/how-to-upload-to-avast-ftp). Thanks!

Thanks for that instruction.
I’ll have to keep it in mind though, because I’ve just restarted my PC and the overload of AvastVBoxSVC seems to have gone.
Everything is nice and quiet again.
My PC is sort-of always on, so it may play up again, sooner or later. I’ll send you the package then.

I’ve got the same problem but only when I run a scan, how can I fix this?

Hi I’m facing the same issue, I’ve generated the memory dump, can I upload the dump?

We have already fixed this bug – as a workaround, you can turn off self protection (in UI, Troubleshooting page) and terminate this process from Task Manager.

thank you, but about the consequences of turning off the self protection?

You can turn it on when you terminate AvastVboxSVC.exe process.

Thank you so much!

Just had this same issue. It was consuming 16GB of RAM! Slowed down my system majorly.

In which version was this bug fixed?
I still have this problem with 2015.10.2.2215.

I have the same problem, task manager didn’t show the memory usage, but resource monitor showed that AvastVBoxSVC.exe was using over 4GB of RAM.
