Downloaded the home edition install to my desktop and installed last night. Seems like a really nice program, and very well thought-out and complete.
It left a file on my desktop named AvBatEx.bav. What is it, and can I just delete it?

Have you tried your friend Google, as it would appers to be a Bat plug-in, is your email client The Bat and did you select the Bat Plug-in in avast?
D’oh! I’m embarassed I didn’t just go to Google first. Apologies.
Yes, it’s a plug-in for The Bat email program. I never heard of The Bat before, and I think I left it checked on the default install options because I wasn’t sure what it was. I’ve gone to their website now and understand. (thebat-email.com) I’ll just delete the file.

If you go to add remove programs, select avast, click change/remove and select change, from there un-tick the Bat box.
