I know this is a silly question, but here it goes:
I was messing around with an old computer with Windows 98 (which I am still on at the moment) and Avast didn’t seem to satisfy me on this system (which I just installed). Of course, the NEW uninstallation tool doesn’t like Windows 98, meaning I can’t use it >:(. Can anyone track down AvClear4 for me? I’m having no luck.
The uninstaller for version 4,5,6,7 is included in the removal tool.
If you have already uninstalled avast then a search for avast will find any leftovers, most likely there will be a file in program files and program data but im not 100% sure of that as iv never used win98 ???
I’m unable to use ASWclear at all on Windows 98. It appears to only work on XP, Vista, and 7, unfortunately, which is why I’m trying to find AvClear4. It, theoretically, should be able to uninstall it.
Avast 4.8 certainly had that an uninstall/change function, though I can’t say with any confidence about win98, but it was certainly available in winXP, see image example
If it isn’t there in win98, then I would guess that there would be an uninstall.exe or something like that in the Program Files folder.
Something weird there then, not sure how you can proceed.
Why can’t you run the aswclear.exe, exactly what errors do you get ?
Since it has cleaning routines for avast 4.8 I would have expected the uninstall utility to run on supported OSes.
OK, that’s a bit of a pain. Under normal circumstances I wouldn’t recommend using third party unstal tools, but you could check out Revo Uninstaller. Unfortunately the current version requires XP and above, so I don’t know if there is an old version of that which is compatible with win98.
This is a problem that you are now doubt experiencing already with other tools.
Other than that it may require a manual removal from the program files and run something like ccleaner (registry cleaner tool) to see if it can then find the orphan registry entries for avast or alwil software.
