Hi all,
we just released new beta AVG 17.5.3017.
What’s new:
- Antiransomware protection
- Password protector - new product to protect passwords stored in your browser
- Tiny Firewall for blocking EternalBlue exploit - (internal) It is a part of StreamFilter, turned ON/OFF by Online Shield
Information about Antiransomware protection:
Antiransomware protection provides next layer of
security which protects your selected folders against to unwanted
modification. These folders are protected by default: %user%/Documents,
%user%/Pictures.
- Install AVG Internet Security Beta
- Prepare a folder for testing - create a new one and add some files into the folder - for example test.doc
- Select this folder to be protected: Menu → Ransomware Protection → Select Strict Mode.
Select “Protected folders” from the left panel and add your folder for testing.
You can change file extensions: “Click on Change protected file types”.
From
now this files from this folder are protected against modification. Try
to change files, allow and block apps. Turn off whole Antiransomware
protection etc…
Try smart mode too:
Menu → Ransomware Protection → Select Smart Mode. Remove all blocked
apps and allowed apps. Try to modify files from your test folder.
Trusted apps are allowed to modify your files. Trusted apps are commonly
used applications (e.g. Microsoft Word, Total commander, Notepad) that
our antivirus recognizes as safe.
Known issues:
- Password protector - browser protection not ready yet
- Disabling Ransomware protection does not work properly
- Licensing for Password protector not finished

Thanks.
Installed in VMware and miraculously was greeted with this message (after install).
Also, Ransomware protection was not installed by default which is rather odd.
Third: is it known problem that Ransomware protection has no icon on the menu?
Fourth: Toggle-button is a bit off
Where are the offline links?
As far as I am aware, there are none.
Tried to install 3 times with different options… Ransomware protection was not installed by default.
The Ransomware protection icon could be a padlock, it would be cool.
Well the attached Image 2 in Reply # 1 already has a padlock icon (Private Data) in use, having the same icon for multiple functions could cause confusion.
It could be a notebook with chains that zip by a padlock.

Personally being ransomware I would think a bandits mask (like the firefox private browsing icon) with a $ (or Bit) Coin icon.
I think no ransomware protection in the free version, but in internet security ??
What about this option in Avast ?

Installed this beta and Antiransomware was nowhere to be found. w00t?
It would be great if Avast devs merge Avast and AVG into only one AV solution, using the UI of AVG. Just a wish …
Ransoware protection is part of AVG Internet security only
Ransoware protection is part of AVG Internet security only
What about this option in Avast ?
How so? In this beta version of avg free came the anti-ransomware but in the final version will not vim that option is this?

I guess that it is to be able to test it in as many systems as possible, if it were only in the AVG Internet security only it wouldn’t get a large number of beta testers. If it was in all beta builds then it would have a wider distribution for beta testing.
And for avast how’s that protection going to be? Only a paid version can enjoy?

You already have an answer for that by one of the Avast Team, hectic-mmv, Reply #11 above.

Yes, Anti-Ransomware will only be in paid versions.
Well that sucks and it’s very unfortunate :(. Avast Free has Anti-Ransomware in it, why can’t AVG Free have it since Avast bought AVG?
Is avast pro version also going to have anti-ransomware? Or just the internet security and premier versions ?
