AVG Version 8 - Wots UP?

Recommendations: If you are an AVG user upgrade to the latest version as soon as possible. Not only will it speed your browsing experience up it will reduce the load on web pages.
no thanks...a week of AVG was enough-just was trying it out-don't know why i did-but the little blue A spinning icon is back in my taskbar spinning again ;D
was just trying out AVG and guess what's back on that computer Also know as a temporary lapse of memory..... Nice to see you got your memory and avast! back on your system.
don't know what happen Bob-i think Garfield put AVG on the computer ::) :o :)

I’m not an AVG employee, I just play one on TV. ;D ;D

Tekzilla just did a show where they recommended AVG, And I had to tell them what I think.

Yeah, the scanner intercepts the click and does a crafty scan before the page is loaded.

Correct.
Can you imagine a site such as a forum with multiple page links [from the one index page] getting DDOS’d by users of AVG8 ?

BTW: AVG now released an update to stop it “pre-scanning” [but you could have disabled the feature with a few but not so easy steps for the non computer vegies out there].

Yet to try AVAST but apparently suffers complaints of poor user interface.
Will have see some screen shots.

guess the problem has been fixed i guess-but have avast! back to stay

Yes, but the damage is done.
Let that be a lesson to Avir/Avast.

Trialing Kaspersky now.

I didn’t like Kaspersky as it decided McAfee SiteAdvisor was malicious ::slight_smile:

I’ll stick with Avast.

McAfee SiteAdvisor has privacy concerns… maybe this is why Kaspersky is complaining and detecting it…

McAfee SiteAdvisor has privacy concerns
What are they ???

Do you have a site reference documenting the privacy concerns ???

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SiteAdvisor#Privacy_concerns

Privacy concerns
SiteAdvisor, while protecting a computer, is known to keep anonymous logs of sites visited in order to prioritize those sites for retesting. [8]
^ McAfee SiteAdvisor Privacy Policy. Retrieved on 2007-04-20.

McAfee SiteAdvisor Privacy Policy The really big picture: Your privacy is protected when you use the McAfee SiteAdvisor Web site (www.siteadvisor.com, the "Web Site") and when you use McAfee SiteAdvisor software. We won't sell or rent your personal information to outside parties. We won't share your personal information with outside parties except to comply with a legal order or to allow our suppliers to fulfill your request to purchase our software. It's that simple.

McAfee SiteAdvisor uses these stats to provide a page ranking.

I bet FireTrust SiteHound do the same.

YoKenny, it’s a matter of confidence… I don’t feel self-confident with McAfee… sorry.

I wouldn’t use their Security Suit but SiteAdvisor IMHO is a valid add-on to help secure my internet browsing.

McAfee anti virus is as bloated as Ferdinand von Zeppelin’s airship just the same as anything from Norton. ( Symantec )

I do trust McAfee SiteAdvisor and FireTrust’s Sitehound.

the new version AVG 8.0.138 is very nice, does not cause traffic to internet. its a nice upgrade. it really works fine now. slows has been reduce.

if we are going to compare avast 4.8 with avg 8.0 both paid versions

Avast 4.8 - has a lot of shield (web shield, standard, im, mail, p2p, script blocking, outlook)

AVG 8.0 - has resident shield and web shield only. (lacking of p2p is very important)

both are fine with me, but choosing what best for every pc is hard to do. AVG detections are much better than avast. and avast confirmed that they are not using heuristic analysis for their resident scanner, which i think is very important for resident scanner to have.

You have no idea how happy I am to be using Avast! as my virus scanner!
Thank you Avast! programmers for such a wonderful product!!
<3

From time to time… I’ve seen the opposite already.

They use generic signatures detection.

yes they are using generic signature for detections, which means that they can only detect infections that are included in their definition database. how come they still have false positive? i wish they could resolve this issue.

according to a source of mine, avast 5.0 which will be released by end this year will include heuristic analysis. which is a good start.

by the way both avg 8.0 and 4.8 are great anti virus products. it really depends on the user who’s using the product.

I used to use Avg. It was avast! that found the viruses Avg left behind.
I’ve now used avast! for the past 3 years without any problems and I have a clean system.
I have however seen a lot of ex Avg users who are now happy and safe avast! users.

Generic signatures have a similar effect of the heuristic detection. They detect variants, polymorphic viruses, etc. Due to this and to the development stage of these signatures, you’ll seeing false positives.

It’s not officially confirmed this.

You are incorrect about what generic signatures are, they are designed to catch variants of malware types (typically win32:trojan-gen) with just one signature that could be hundreds or thousands which may be caught by a signature (not uncommon to heuristics) and there is only the one signature in the database.

There are also algorithmic detections over and above the generic signatures, again one algorithmic signature can detect many different variants.

I don’t know who your source is but they are incorrect, there won’t be heuristics (a term which is clearly defined) in avast! 5, but there has been little firm about what ‘will’ be in version 5.0. There will be other additions, a type of behaviour function is one that has been hinted at.
