Anyone know of a decent free bit of software to convert avi files to mpg?

I’ve tried a few from search results already with very poor results. It’s taking ages each time to convert a file and check the results, most don’t even get as far as starting to convert for one reason or another.

I was hoping somebody might already be using somthing that works reliably.
