So I did the trendmicro removal and the last reboot the Welcome screen was back to normal - before it went to a white screen with plain black text instead of the usual windows 7 background screen with white text. The bar at the bottom of the screen still looks like safe mode, so I’m a little unsure about using the internet as usual. Much better than is was before though.
Could you right click the desktop and select personalise and play with the settings there, I am on windows 8 now and I forget how it is changed :-[
You could try to set the design to the Windows 7 Standard one. That should restore most of it.
