Sorry but I didn’t see any avast traces in your minidumps. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the problem hasn’t anything to do with avast, it’s just that it’s quite tricky to analyse. The problem is, since you don’t have any SP installed, I can’t analyse the dumps properly because I don’t have the OS symbol files.
Even if you are on dial-up, it shouldn’t be a problem… there is an option to order SP1 on CD directly from Microsoft. I remember it was at no charge few months ago. Other possibility is to find that CD, or even better SP2 somewhere else… maybe some of your friends have it. It’s not illegal, if you paid for your copy of Windows OS, then, no problems at all…
I don’t even know how you manage to live without Service Packs and all those updates…
Updated to 4.6.652, I will reenable all the modules and see whether I get stop errors
I don't even know how you manage to live without Service Packs and all those updates...
I’m not on broadband, not using IE at all…
Since the day I used Winxp, I am hit by only 3 virii
Blaster, Welchia, & Trojan (forgotten the name)
so I don’t see any problems without SP, I thought SP are just security patches?
SP stands for Service Pack. It gives you many advantages, not just security related patches… there are some Microsoft program updates for programs that were already boundled with your OS… Even if they are Security Patches, I wouldn’t ignore them, and certainly I wouldn’t call them “just” security patches. After all, why using antiviruses if we don’t care about security…
This time, I tried another combination, I enabled all protection except “Web Shield”
and guess what? no stop errors
I think I am quite sure that Web Shield is causing all these stop errors.
I have no other options but to disable Web Shield, am I more vulnarable to viruses if web shield is off?
Maybe I just have to wait for the next major release of Avast before reenable Web Shield, I have confidence that this problem will be gone after major rewrite of Avast?
Well, there’s no major “rewrite” of avast! planned. Sure, some things will change in the future, but especially Web Shield is quite a new part, so there’s no reason to rewrite it right now.
Of course, we would like to fix any possible errors that may be present… but if Vlk said he cannot see anything in the dump… it’s not very likely at the moment (if it’s an avast! problem at all).
As for the roadmap, I don’t think there’s any plan for avast! 5 yet. Certainly not this year, I’d say.
It has to be a coincidence. WebShield cannot be responsible for this.
IMHO you will eventually find out that the system is crashing even with it disabled…
Might be a hardware or a software problem of course, but if it’s software it is definitely in the kernel mode - this means some driver must be causing this, and this condition is not met for WebShield.
