Bad Pool Caller

Recently, I got too many blue screens

It will happen when I go online while i am browsing

or

blue screen popped up when I try to disconnect

or

Which rarely happen, I am able to disconnect, everything is fine, until I click the shut down button , blue screen appears when Avast service is being stopped by Windows XP

this is weird because blue screens never appear if I did not go online

please help me

it’s something like “bad pool caller”

thanks

There should be some minidumps in your Windows\Minidump folder… can you send them, e.g. to vlk@avast.com ?

Is your machine overclocked?

No I don’t overclock

But I do turn off spread spectrum in the BIOS, may it be the cause?

Besides Avast, I have Outpost free edition

I have sent a few *.dmp to the email stated above

Thanks again

Hi,

do you know that all emails sent to you bounce back?

try again later (in reply to RCPT TO command)

BTW is there any particular reason for not using any service pack on your Windows XP?

Thanks
Vlk

About email : My account exceeds quota, I’ve emptied my mail box now

I’m on dial up!!!
sp1 + sp2 is more than 200MB :o

Anyway, if I stop everything except “standard shield” there is no more blue screens, might it be the “web shield” that is causing all these problems

Web shield is crucial to me compared to standard shield, I’m afraid of worms like Blaster, installs itself silently without my knowledge…

Is standard shield good enough to stop worms such as Blaster?

kotrtim, have you sent couple of your latest minidump files to Vlk’s email address, as Igor suggested you in the second post ?

I'm afraid of worms like Blaster, installs itself silently without my knowledge.......
blaster patch: http://msblast.maruhn.com/msblast-patch.html sasser patch: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3549EA9E-DA3F-43B9-A4F1-AF243B6168F3&displaylang=en

Network Shield protects you against those vulnerabilities.

I’ve already sent it…

There must be system conflict or something else…I donno,

Since the day i turn off all the web/network/p2p shield, no more blue screens!

Sorry but I didn’t see any avast traces in your minidumps. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the problem hasn’t anything to do with avast, it’s just that it’s quite tricky to analyse. The problem is, since you don’t have any SP installed, I can’t analyse the dumps properly because I don’t have the OS symbol files.

Even if you are on dial-up, it shouldn’t be a problem… there is an option to order SP1 on CD directly from Microsoft. I remember it was at no charge few months ago. Other possibility is to find that CD, or even better SP2 somewhere else… maybe some of your friends have it. It’s not illegal, if you paid for your copy of Windows OS, then, no problems at all…

I don’t even know how you manage to live without Service Packs and all those updates…

Cheers !

Updated to 4.6.652, I will reenable all the modules and see whether I get stop errors

I don't even know how you manage to live without Service Packs and all those updates...

I’m not on broadband, not using IE at all…
Since the day I used Winxp, I am hit by only 3 virii
Blaster, Welchia, & Trojan (forgotten the name)
so I don’t see any problems without SP, I thought SP are just security patches?

Please correct me if I’m wrong…thanks

SP stands for Service Pack. It gives you many advantages, not just security related patches… there are some Microsoft program updates for programs that were already boundled with your OS… Even if they are Security Patches, I wouldn’t ignore them, and certainly I wouldn’t call them “just” security patches. After all, why using antiviruses if we don’t care about security…

Cheers !

Updated to 4.6.652, It didn’t help

This time, I tried another combination, I enabled all protection except “Web Shield”

and guess what? no stop errors

I think I am quite sure that Web Shield is causing all these stop errors.

I have no other options but to disable Web Shield, am I more vulnarable to viruses if web shield is off?

Maybe I just have to wait for the next major release of Avast before reenable Web Shield, I have confidence that this problem will be gone after major rewrite of Avast?

When will Avast 5.0 be released? Roadmaps?

Well, there’s no major “rewrite” of avast! planned. Sure, some things will change in the future, but especially Web Shield is quite a new part, so there’s no reason to rewrite it right now.

Of course, we would like to fix any possible errors that may be present… but if Vlk said he cannot see anything in the dump… it’s not very likely at the moment (if it’s an avast! problem at all).

As for the roadmap, I don’t think there’s any plan for avast! 5 yet. Certainly not this year, I’d say.

It has to be a coincidence. WebShield cannot be responsible for this.
IMHO you will eventually find out that the system is crashing even with it disabled…

“***STOP: BAD_POOL_CALLER” I believe is usually from a software bug. But, we don’t know what other software is installed.

With Web Shield enable , Windows can crash about 3-4 times in an hour.

After disabling Webm Shield, I can browse the net for more than an hour without crashing…Can it be that coincident?

Never mind, I will reply a week later, if I have no stop errors!

Thanks

Just to inform, nothing had happen since webshield is disabled, so it must be related to webshield or conflict with other programs…

Might be a hardware or a software problem of course, but if it’s software it is definitely in the kernel mode - this means some driver must be causing this, and this condition is not met for WebShield.

try a diffrent modem.

I got this bsd repairing a xp and removed the modem and it went through
