Wife’s laptop with Windows XP got infected with something, when she logged off she saw a quick pop-up advertising HP antivirus option. When she started comp again, after log in nothing but the desktop background shows up. Unable to access task manager. a popup window says task manager has been disabled by admin. Can only change user by pressing windows key and L at same time. was able to access a user other than the main one and open task manager but nothing else. Used task manager to run Spy Bot search and destroy but after update the program was killed and when I attempted to start it again, a pop up window would say that windows could not find the file path. During all of this multiple internet pop-ups were showing up and when I tried to search for anti-virus on the internet, other web sites would show up. Installed avast, pop ups have stopped but still no graphical icons of anytype and still unable to start task manager on main user profile. registered avast has search the drive twice before window loaded and I am in the middle of a scan after windows loaded. Is there any help out there?
Sounds like scum/scamware.
If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it and report the findings (it should product a log file).

- MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, On-Demand only in free version http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/malwarebytes/mbam-setup.exe, right click on the link and select Save As or Save File (As depending on your browser), save it to a location where you can find it easily later. - 2. SUPERantispyware On-Demand only in free version.
Don’t worry about reported tracking cookies they are a minor issue and not one of security, allow SAS to deal with them though. - See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_cookie.
Downloaded the first program suggested, ran it, pop window opened saying Unable to execute file, create process failed code 2. System could not find the file specified.
Last avast scan finished. 0 corrupted files found, couldnt scan 127 files due to bad path. Still no change in icons or menus.
What is your version of windows?
Is it 32bit or 64bit?
umm, not sure?? my husband fell asleep after being up for way too long so I am left to figure it out (hopefully before my timesheet is due at midnight). So I am not sure. How would find out? Its an HP Pavillion DV 1000 - It is XP.
Can you get windows explorer to open or get the my computer icon to run.
Do you see the my computer icon on your screen.
Remember you wont be able to see new replies on this forum until you refresh(reload) the page.
sorry, I was helping my 2 year old. No icons show up on the screen. That is the main problem. Nothing shows up just a blank screen. If I try to pull up the task manager it only works on users other than my own. If I use my own user it says task manager has been disabled by admin. If i use others I can blindly do things.
I guess I can get to My computer if I go through the task manager on the guest user
Ok what happens when you try to open Start btton (bottom left corner) any icons?
Does pressing Windows key and the R button at the same time do anything?
Windows key is the button on the keyboard that looks like the windows logo and found usually (not always) between ctrl and alt.
Windows R does nothing
No start button in view so no icons there
If I go in through my computer in the task manager I can get to each user and the start menu, when I was looking at these there was an “Advanced Virus Remover” in my start menu on the main user and not on any other usesr. Could this be what is doing it?
Seems you got a rouge and some other stuff.
Rogues are fake antivirus programs that will trick you into buying it won’t let you an certian website (ie. a website that helps you get it removed) and its useless and screws up the computer. Are you getting pop-ups about viruses and security ect.
I was getting a ton of them until we did an avast scan, but I still can’t get anything else to work. He was able to run it before windows started, to get rid of some stuff because it wouldnt let any of the anti virus stuff load in windows. We were able to do another scan in windows but it didn’t detect anything the second time.

You may need the help of Malwarebytes experts to remove the infection.
NOTE: If Malwarebytes won't run or HijackThis won't run please still create a new post in the Malware Removal - HijackThis Logs forum and explain what happenshttp://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=9573
Easy workaround is, download a randomized renamed mbam.exe version from herethat line was below here posted by yokenny

This should get malware bytes to run. Make sure to update and run quick scan and do the scan while disconnected from the internet.
Thanks, I will try that
Here the possible solution to your problem, the rescue disk from G Data or Avira:
*the site is in spanish
http://g-data-bootcd.softonic.com/
Here the rescue tools from avira:
Try mbam first and post log back here before rescue disk.
I tried the first way that said download the renamed one and it said Error Code 707 (3,0)
I am trying it using the second rename method- this method worked and is scanning. Will post when finished
When scan is over you will get a log (a text file pop up after scan) post that here. Make sure you updated the program before scan.
