Base Filtering Engine needed?

I know the engine is needed for Win 7 Firewall, but is this service needed for Avast?

I wouldn’t have known what a base filtering engine was - if it ran over me - before your post.

So a quick search and it turned up some stuff that could well explain it.

Given this it could be that avast uses it for website scanning, the General Information is to be believed. That said there is no date on that page so I have no idea how old it might be. Not forgetting that avast now also scans https traffic.

As an avast user and not an avast team member I can only speculate why it might use/require it.
