Battery Usage Question

Starting today, which would cover updates 121029-0 and -01, I noticed that Avast is showing 3% of total battery usage. That may not sound like much, but it’s always been less than 1% and at 3%, that’s about as much as Android System uses. I would consider my usage today running various apps, internet usage, calls etc. typical of any other day, so it’s not like there is anything I’m doing on the phone out of the ordinary. Avast downloads were at 481 KB which is about what I normally see. This is on a Droid Razr Maxx and I am not running the Anti-Theft component at this time.

Thought this was strange that I would see a spike today in battery consumption and would be interested into any insight. Thanks.

I know it won’t happen, just reporting my case.
The screen took 54% of the battery used today and avast! is less than 1%.
I read a lot of things in the mobile, so the use is normal for me.

Hi,

I am not aware of any changes in the updates you mentioned. Do you think you can observe the battery usage for another day or two and get back to me with the results?

Filip

Update:

First two days: Avast between 2-3%
Next two days: Avast less than 1% (normal for my phone)
Today: Avast at 2-3% again.

Interestingly, when Avast was showing less than 1% yesterday, I tried to ramp up battery usage with Avast immediately after clearing battery usage data by repeatedly updating, scanning, messing round with the GUI, opening and closing apps, and it never went above 1%. I basically tried to get Avast battery usage up in number, but couldn’t.

Of course it’s impossible to say for sure what “normal” is since everybody is using a different phone with different combinations of apps running, but this week Avast is showing 2-3 times the battery usage for three out of the five days so far which is “not normal” for me. It’s not a huge deal yet, but for something that is only supposed to run when needed, and when every little battery usage starts to chip away at total time between charges, it could eventually be a bigger problem. Also, as an Avast IS customer who has had generally good experiences with Avast products, I would like to recommend this mobile security app to others without concern that I would be creating a battery usage problem for them.

Thanks.

Hi,

I understand your concern, but 1-3% is completely normal. Actually the numbers are exactly what they say, they are only a share of the total consumption. If you, for example, play some game for 30 minutes, the consumption of the display will increase a lot while the consumption of AMS will drop since it won’t do much while the game is already running.
