Beginning of the End for Alienware ......

Though I have never owned one, it is commonly known that Alienware makes one of the best computers. I fear the end is now just a few years away …

Hi CharleyO, let’s hope not. Maybe Dell will let Alienware stay a seperate company to itself (like computer associates did tiny).Somewhere I have read that Dell has entertained the thought of selling computers with the AMD processors, and maybe this is their way to do it.Sure Alienware sells both intel and amd,but seems serious gamers prefer amd.

Well there are already some Dell computers using AMD CPU chips, well Laptops anyway some using the 64 bit Turion processor. So perhaps it wouldn’t be such a stretch for them to use AMD in desktop systems ;D

I think the big problem is Intel and the deal they give Dell is very attractive, unfortunately it comes with strings I think. If Dell were to sell large numbers of desktops with AMD processors Intel would probably pull/renegotiate the deal.

I have heard about Alienware but don’t know much about the company the computers are a bit on the more expensive side. But they seem good. I hope that Dell does not shut down Alienware because I know people who buy there computers.

DavidR,I agree.Intel is probably the largest chip maker and thus carries a lot of clout with computer makers.
IMO you can get equal or faster systems with amd chips and for less money; at least that has been my experience.

That has been my experience too, I haven’t used Intel processors in many, many, years. I haven’t bought a system off the shelf on about 10 years, I have bought the components (that I felt were best for me) and built my own systems. Computer manufactures are working to a price point and a profit margin so some components, like PSUs are cheap.

I have also found that AMD CPUs also run cooler and are often better for overclocking if that is your bag, even better value for money ;D

My experience has been similar to David’s in that this is my 3rd PC with an AMD cpu. And my second custom built PC. The last “branded” PC I bought was the first one with an AMD cpu. The old one (2nd w/AMD cpu) I have now was built by someone else but by the time it was 3 years old, I had changed or added everything but the cpu and motherboard. It’s now 5 years old. So, this one (3rd w/AMD) I built myself and started using last Oct.

I would have had to pay twice what I have in this one to get a “branded” computer with similar specs … and would have still been stuck with “manufacturer specific” parts. :frowning:

It’s also been about a 10 year span.

I did a copycat of an a Alienware myself, I put togheter this system at a lower price than the Alienware I was about to buy:
AMD fx 57
nVidia (2 ea. ) Gt 7800
Asus AN8 Premium Mobo SLI
Thermaltake Shark Alum case
Themaltake 650 p/s
Hitachis 250 GB HD (2 ea.)
4 GB Kinston x memo
2 TT 120mm fans + the 2 of case (and not a bit noisy)
w x64 OS
All for a total of $2467.00 usd ( tks to a friend discount as a tech.)

Wow … nice set-up, pepeaida! And you probably saved yourself about $1000 USD. 8)

Wow when I need a new computer I need to go to pepeaida not HP or some other brand ;D Those specs are awesome!!!

Dell was known for corporate and home computers for years, but they never made any good gamer system. Latest XPS series are moving in this direction but not really something that could compare with Alienware gaming systems.
And we all know gaming is a huge business in these days (hardware and software wise).
