Aside from the seriously annoying crap (i.e. Chrome et. al.) that Avast tries to foist on you when you install a program update, and the inability to schedule when you want automatic updates done, I’m finding the CPU usage of AvastSvc.exe (regularly 50%+ for long random periods, when the computer is doing nothing - simply idling) to be simply and completely unacceptable. It’s impossible to shut the process down in task manager and I have no idea why it’s such a resource hog when it shouldn’t be doing anything. The only way to get my CPU cycles back is to shut down Avast Shields. I had to stay with version 7 because of “features” that I found unacceptable in later versions. I’m going to have to abandon Avast altogether and try something else.
and the inability to schedule when you want automatic updates done, maybe not shedule, but you can change default time intervall VPS are usually released twice a day .... and stream updates comes in evry 5-15 min why do you need to shedule it?
you can also remove any module you dont want http://www.avast.com/en-eu/faq.php?article=AVKB96#artTitle
You asked: “Why do I need to schedule it?” Because I don’t want the update grabbing resources randomly when I’m in the middle of something.
Also, it’s my understanding that AvastSvc.exe is integral to Avast and can’t be stopped, removed or controlled.
The actual “regular” updates take very little, if any, CPU usage.
The streaming updates take almost zero resources.
Try a repair of avast…>Control Panel>Uninstall a Program>double click “avast”>click “repair”>reboot.
If the updates take so little why am I continuously experiencing AvastSvc.exe eating half or more of my CPU cycles?
The avastSvc.exe doesn’t handle the updates in version 9 that is handled by C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\Setup\instup.exe.
In version 7 that isn’t handled by avastSvc.exe either, but by the avast.setup file also in the Setup folder.
So there is something else going on with your system.
