Hi guys :),
What is the best way to upgrade from avast 5.o.xxx free to the Pro ver.?
Is it preferable to completely UN-install the free version or is it safe to install the Pro one on top of the free?
Thanks

I upgraded free to AIS without any problems. I don’t think removing the Free version would be needed, since AIS and Pro are the same core as Free, just with added components.
Thanks Garamel,
I proceeded to install the Pro ver. ON-TOP of the free one and the results were not good:
1.- Upon launching the Pro installer, the ONLY option that appeared was to UN-Install the free one, nothing else, so I proceeded to click on that option and the Free ver. was Uninstalled, then I re booted my PC.
2.- After the re-boot process, I HAD to launch again the Pro-Installer in order to run the installation. Finished and the first thing I noticed was the Yellow Warning triangle on top avast´s sys tray icon saying that I was NOT fully protected. Opened the GUI and the Mail and Network shields were disabled, so I re-booted once again.
3.- After rebooting, the yellow triangle was still there and it was NOT possible to enable both shields at all, no matter what, so I checked my Firewall (Online Armor), but everything was OK, nothing avast related was blocked.
4.- So I had to UN-Install completely, with the uninstall utility and it was ONLY after that that the PRO installation was fine, so maybe it is a good idea to FIRST uninstall any previous installed version !
Heh-heh, well, sorry I led you to that outcome.
If I recall correctly (that is IF, after all, I only did it once), I added the AIS license via the GUI of the free version, and it went like a snap from there. Did you do something differently?
according to igor, you should only click the license file and the program should transfer into the program the license is for…
Uninstalling should not be necessary. After entering the license file (e.g. by doubeclicking on it), the program should update itself to the corresponding paid edition (provided the computer is connected to the Internet).http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=62892.0
Yeah, but what if you want to trial the paid versión and you do not have a license yet?
You have no other option than to UN-install the free one first
Well, i’m pro user and i did an install from scratch because i had problems
If you are not using a license file for the upgrade, then a clean install would be best because it is the license file that activates the upgrade. You left out Trial in your original post and this confused the situation.
So, to go from Free to Pro Trial, you will need to uninstall Free first. If you were upgrading Free to Pro(paid not trial), then the above suggestions would have been correct.
well, anyway I think it was a good thing for me to ask, so this issue got clarified don´t you think?
Yes, you are right.
