Googles social networking site Orkut has been used to spread a malicious trojan says WebSense http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/154668/beware_an_orkut_trojan.html take extra care!!! :o
It is not surprising as social networks are ideal locations to spread malware.
Although it is always each users responsibility to use due care/caution on any site,
what I don’t quite understand is, after carefully reading Google and Orkut’s terms of service (TOS), I can’t see where there’s any provision for them or warning that they will cancel a user’s account and remove content that is known to be virus/trojan/malware laden, and posted by that user.
I see most ISP’s “pull the plug” abilities in their TOS.
I know they warn in the TOS that they can’t be responsible for any harmful content, but why can’t they be responsible and prudent enough to remove known malware content in a timely fashion when it is reported??
It joins many other social networks, which are a prime target for the spreading of malware, facebook, youtube, etc. etc.
Malware producers love social networks.
The problem is that often the malware isn’t actually on the site, it wasn’t uncommon to have rotating banner ads on a page and one or more can activate the remote malware. So it wasn’t the user at fault but the provider as some ads were more than simply an ad.
