bho demon?

Avast has detected a virus on my computer. Its under the program files and it is called BHO demon 2. The virus description under avast is win32:agent-ja. How did this get on my computer did it stem from a certain program? Why hasn’t Norton ever detected it? The original file name is bhotb-all.html.

Any help would be appreciated.

Ricky

Ricky… what do you mean? Do you have both (avast and Norton) at the same time in this computer?
It’s difficult to say how it get in, but avast take it that is what means 8)

Hi Tidalwarrior,

BHO demon is a normal legit program, upload the file in question to jotti.de.
Interesting to know the results there. But you know two resident anti virus scanners on one computer is asking for a lot of problems. Just like you have two dogs to protect your home starting to fight each other.

Sorry I don’t have Norton on my computer. I meant in the past. What sneaky company does this come from and why does Avast display it as a trojan?

Ricky

Tiadalwarior,

This could well be a false positive, did you check it on jotti? BHO demon does not come from a sneaky company, same as toobarcop, which is flagged by DrWeb as a trojan, but this also is a false positive.

Hi polonus ;D

Isn’t the link for the online scanner virusscan.jotti.org

Since you did have Norton on your computer, are you sure it is completely uninstalled? ???

Norton/Symantec products are infamous for not completely uninstalling using the normal methods. Leftover files/registry entries from Norton can foul any other av from installing correctly and/or working correctly. This may be how the infection happened if it is an actual infection. It may be an FP (false positive) caused by the above situation.

Please read and use the tool mentioned in the post at the link below to insure Norton is completely uninstalled.

I don’t see a need to do that. I don’t won’t the tools themselves to cause problems. The computer is running fine now. What silly is how these viruses just get on the computer and it seems to be just a mistery. I searched the internet and symantec website and thats just a joke. I do have it quarantined and the computer is working fine so I guess I’ll delete it in the near future. I’ll wait to make sure its not a geniune file.

Hi Tidalwarrior,

What you could do in the mean time is keep your operational system up to date with all the updates and patches, also for IE, even when you are using an alternate browser vulnerabilities and holes in your operational system (system packs, patches) can lead to automatic installs of malware. You cannot leave a computer as it comes out of the box, it will be infected in no time (wee couple of minutes), that is the sad state of affairs to-day. Sorry but that is reality for you, but you can do something about it.

Well, hopefully your computer will not get infected again. But, if it does you will know that it is because remaining Norton files/registry enties inteferred and prevented avast from protecting.

It is your computer and your call.

While it is silly, it is not a mystery .... as Polonus explains above. There are just too many bad people who write malware.
I do have it quarantined ...... I'll wait to make sure its not a geniune file.
Since it is in quarantine, it is a good idea to wait at least 2 weeks, right click the file in quarantine & scan again, and then delete it if still infected.

Hi Tidalwarrior,

CharleyO is right, and especially there that when using another resident AV product you have to clear all instances of Norton (files/temp files/registry) off of your comp. A good automatic tool to do so is suggested higher up in this thread. Running it for all safety won’t harm you or your computer one bit. We had people begging to clear norton off of their machines, and I made real friends in this way, while they had been manually struggling for hours even days. Learn security here, enjoy your malware free surfing, come back and maybe for the future learn to help others. You have come to the right place to do so. Welcome to our forum.

Thank you for all your help, I’ll defently keep that norton removal tool in mind. Norton can be a resource and hard drive space hog.
