I was about to download AutopatcherXP when I saw that it was a bit torrent file. This is a new one on me. I did a Google search but the information I found was not exactly clear. Could anyone give me a morons guide to what it is, what it does and do I need it. Ta in advance, even a link would do 8)
BitTorrent is a content distribution protocol that enables efficient software distribution and peer-to-peer sharing of very large files, such as entire movies and TV shows, by enabling users to serve as network redistribution points. Rather than having to send a download to each customer requesting it, the distributor or holder of content sends it to one customer who in turn sends it to other customers who together share the pieces of the download back and forth until everyone has the complete download. This makes it possible for the original server to serve many requests for large files without requiring immense amounts of bandwidth. According to reports, a user may expect to see a full-length movie arrive within a few hours.
BitTorrent’s protocol has been described as a “swarming, scatter and gather” file transfer protocol. It was written in the Python programming language by Bram Cohen and is distributed freely under an open source license.
So I actually open my system to others and enable them to extract the file that I have or am about to download ? Is there any security considerations to this or is the transfer restricted to just one file ? Becoming clearer Eddy

Hmm I shall be reading a while I think 8)
Basically, you download parts of the same (large) file from many people who have it on their system, and at the same time, people who are also downloading it can get the parts from you that you have so far downloaded. Make sense? :
Azureus is very good. Needs Java.
The BEST!!!
Methinks me understand slightly. I think I’ll leave it until I am happier with the ramifications. Ta everyone though 8)
