Today, Avast blocked a potential virus/malware from running, and then it told me I should run a boot scan. I let it do so, and after awhile the scan completed.
However, when I started windows and entered my password, I was met with a black screen and my cursor. I can move my cursor and I can use some shortcuts (so I can access Task Manager, as well as browse and run all of my files), but the rest is gone. How can I fix this? I looked around, and I could only find solutions for old versions of Avast.
I am running Windows 8.1 on a Lenovo Y500 laptop. Also, I started the boot scan from an older version of Avast. I have since updated and restarted hoping that would fix the problem, bit no dice.
Boot in safe mode.

Boot normal.

You made a huge mistake by running a older/outdated version of avast.
Never run old/outdated software to scan for malware.
It will not recognize the latest threads and lacks a lot of fixing options.
Please attach the logfile from the scan to your next post.
It may tell us what happened.
Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
