When I open Avast! free and go to scan computer, I see a bunch of icons down the left side, but no text next to them and I cannot select or click on any of the icons. So, I can’t scan my computer. Also, it seems to be stuck on step 1/3 for updating. My current status is registered…

I am using Avast! 5.0.418 on windows XP.

Try repair and restart

For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

i have seen this many time after install. all you need to do is reboot once after that and its fixed
