blocked email pages

does avast block certain websites?
I have used a tesco email account for some time which i now view via its website, when i try to login the page just comes up blank white and says its done, i also have a work email address which i need to type in the http address for again same blank page. i have turned off zonealarm but still same problem. i no that work have not paided to have its page certified, so i was wondering if avast would block these pages from opening, if it does how can i allow certain pages to open
thanks

Only infected sites (generally detected) are blocked.
Can you post a screenshot of the error?

What version of zonealarm do you have the free or Pro version as this sounds very like a privacy control function. I know you said that you switched off ZA, but that is no guarantee that it is completely stopped as low level drivers and hooks would still be running.

We have seen this sort of thing before with ZA (primarily the pro version) when you logon at an http page, which switches to https for validation and back to http. Parameters have to be passed between these pages and it is these parameters that are being blocked.

Does this happen on other logon locations ?

I have a Tesco email account also, now I generally download it using OE6, but I have just logged on at tesco.net with my standard email username and password and the page opens, see image. So avast is working as expected, but I don’t use ZA, but Agnitum’s Outpost Firewall.

thanks for the help,
unfortunately i do not no how to post a screen shot of the page, with tesco its just a blank page with done written in the bottom left hand corner and the http address written on the new tab, the rest of the page is just blank.
i’m using the free version of ZA, with just these two pages unable to open that i use, everything else is fine.
can i adjust ZA to allow these pages or is it worth uninstalling ZA and trying then.
thanks

I doubt a screen shot would provide any information, mine was just to show that avast isn’t blocking my access to that site’s web mail when I log in.

For the future should you need to post a screen shot (cropped to only show relevant info), then see this topic How to post an Image.

Whilst the free version of ZA isn’t meant to have the privacy function (though I no longer have a clue what comes in ZA as there have been so many variants of free), there is most likely something in the settings that is blocking the r=transfer of parameters as it moves from http through validation and back to the http page with your inbox.

thanks,
just uninstalled ZA on my laptop and i was allowed onto tesco, but not my work e-mail, so it is defiantly ZA causing the problem,

Many forum users are using these:

  • PC Tools Firewall seems to have the least user headaches as it doesn’t seem to be constantly asking the user questions about this and that.
  • Online Armor for the most parts fine but it has caused some users grief after avast program updates and that is something you have to watch out for.
  • Outpost Firewall 2009 free, a cut down version of the Outpost Firewall Pro version, which should still provide good protection, http://free.agnitum.com/. Download, http://www.filehippo.com/download_outpost_firewall/

I don’t know why you can’t get into your work email, if you can post the error message (if one is displayed) and we can try and find out ?
Is your work email also webmail (e.g. viewed on your browser) or do you download it using an email program ?
If so what email program are you using ?

unfortunately i don’t get an error message just a blank page. to access my work email i type in its http address to my browser, they use outlook express, which they have not paid to be security approved by microsoft.
does Comodo work well with Avast as an option

Your work email also looks like it is webmail as you are entering its http address into a browser, it doesn’t matter what email program they use.

I have never used comodo and some find it somewhat heavy on resources and pop-up notifications, some swear by it, others swear at it, that is why I have left it out on the three that I gave. However, id does work well with avast, but it comes as a suite and you should ensure that you do a custom install omitting the AV (antivirus) element.

I would have thought that accessing your work email would require some sort of additional security, VPN (private network).

thanks,
will try one of the other firewalls on my laptop and see how it goes. as for the work email, well they might have to speak to me instead. there seems to be a believe on a previous page that there will be a free avast firewall in the near future, might be the best solution long term.
thanks again

You’re welcome.

I don’t know where you read that, but I rather doubt there will be a free avast firewall in the near future. If there is a free firewall and a free antivirus, it goes a long way to being a great competitor the the paid Avast Internet Suite (AIS), losing Avast Software revenue.
