Blocking Local Networked Devices

Any news on how to stop Avast & AVG from blocking local networked devices that have HTML/Java control panels onboard?

I usually get at least 2 or 3 calls a day from Avast/AVG users who can no longer access there energy monitoring system and so far I can only tell them to disable or uninstall the software.

I’ve heard it’s something called Port Scanner at work.

It is already fixed a few days ago with a micro update.
People need to update avast.

This should work :

  • Boot a system
  • Wait +/- 15 minutes (for the update to download/install)
  • Reboot the system to finish the installation of the update

Excellent, Thank You!

I did the updates and rebooted but it still blocked access to the HTML/Java control panel on the energy monitor. I can access it if I disable Avast.

You could try the latest beta: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=15

Beta version also blocks access to local network devices. So far Avast/AVG is the only anti virus software that does this. Customers who switch to other software like Norton or McAfee have no problems. In the past Avast/AVG didn’t block Local Network HTML/Java.

We have found that the component called “Web Shield” is causing the problem. When this is disabled everything works fine. Any thoughts on why Web Shield would be blocking locally accessed HTML/Java?

New version released:

There are lots of people still reporting local network issues even with 17.4.2294.

I hate unfixed fixes

Are there any members of the development staff who are on this forum? Do they know of this problem?

They do now.

Yes, see https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=201702.msg1392132#msg1392132 for just one. But I would say there has been insufficient input from avast team members.

Many of the volunteers helping on the forums have also been pushing at resolutions behind the scenes.

Could you narrow it down to which component of Avast is causing the issue.

It seems to me like the Firewall but free users wouldn’t have that component, albeit, it could just be Web Shield too.

As narrow as we can go is Web Shield. There isn’t anything within Web Shield that we can turn off to allow local HTML/Java to run. Avast only allows local network web pages if we disable Web Shield.

Ok, thanks.

I’ve notified the devs of the Web Shield of the issue.

If they need any info please put them in contact with me. My email is ddaugherty@theenergydetective.com

We’re open to working with the Avast team to resolving this issue. We produce an energy monitoring system. The part of the system that collects data and controls the system setup connects to the local network via Cat5. We use an HTML page embedded on the device as a user interface. This is what is being blocked. It didn’t get blocked until sometime around 3 or 4 weeks ago.

It is a really bad idea to post your email on a public webboard.
The bad guys will harvest it and (ab)use it.

A clean installation of the latest avast version has solved the problem for many people.
