blue balls xp taskbar

The blue balls have disappeared from my taskbar. I have unchecked the Hide Inactive Icons. I don’t have a clue what to do next. I am running XP home.

Welcome to the forum ralfkaro!

If you load avast! (start->programs->avast) what does it say under resident protection? Can you enable the resident protection from there if it’s disabled?

progarams >start>avast shows “standard” right click shows no start command. Running AshDisp.exe under c:\programfiles\Alwilsoftware\avast4\ restores the balls. I could just put a shortcut in the startup folder but that seems more like a bandaid than a fix.

AshDisp.exe should be at All users Registry Startup…
For any reason - probably ad-watch or tea timer from Spybot or WinPatrol or any other program that monitor your startup itens - you delete that entry.
If you repair your installation through Control Panel you will get that entry back… Please, disable other programs while intalling the antivirus 8

:frowning: My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ALWIL Software\Avast\4.0 has now entry for ashDisp.exe if that is where it is supposed to be. I tried “change/remove” in the control panel under add/remove programs but that did not seem to help. A search of the registry for <ashdisp.exe> didnot turn up any hits under avast. Technical if you tell me where and wht type of registry entry is needed, I’ll plug it in. Thanks in advance

See if it’s still in your directory:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe
Alson do what Tech said just go to start, settings, control panel, add remove programs and select avast! and choose repair!
That should straighten things out again.

Bob3160 ashDisp.exe is still in C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe. I finally found the repair button in contol panel add/remove avast, I had not scrolled down far enough. >:( Bad news, The repair did not fix the problem, but when I add a shortcut to C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe in the startup folder, the blue balls are there and everything appears to work just fine, maybe I will just have to leave it that way. Thanks again and if you have any more suggestions, fire away.

Please wait, I’m searching right now…
Find!

Registry Path
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Value Name
avast!

Value
C:\ … your path for …\ashDisp.exe

This happened to me and I just uninstalled / reinstalled avast! Problem fixed.

My blue balls have disappeared also. What’s up. an avast! problem?

;D Thanks to all who posted and the quick response.
To those that care or are just want to know the fix…
I followed Tech’s registry entry and now the avast blue balls appear in the task bar just as they were supposed too. I have no idea what made them disappear. The registry entry solved my problem… Thanks again for all the help. Best free antivirus there is … is AVAST! I have installed it on several of my friends computers and none have had any problems but if they do I know where to go to get IMMEDIATE help… Thanks again

This Fix might be an excellent add on to RejZoR’s program.

I went into:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp and clicked on file. Voila! balls reappeared. I wonder why they disappeared in the first place?

simple fix though.

Gene,
If you reboot, are the blue avast balls still there or are they gone again?

Bob: Earlier this evening I right clicked on the Start icon and messed with Taskbar properties. Later, I noticed avast!, SG, S&D, Win messenger, and Yahoo! messenger icons missing. I got the avast! back by clicking on ashDisp. All of the icons returned when I rebooted a little later. I obviously did it to myself! Sorry for adding to the confusion.

Hello!

Please download my avast! External Control (link in signature).
Run it and use avast! Status Info and when you see lots of info about avast! simply click button Dump to log. New file will appear on your desktop with almost all info regarding avast! instalation and current status.
Then simply attach that log file to next post you’ll write here the same way you attach images.

This way we’ll be able to get all info in one snap to help you faster.
Thanks

PS: This program doesn’t gather any personal info, just avast! status info
