Blue Screen Of Death on Shutdown

This program is causing me to get a BSoD when I try to shutdown my computer. I am almost positive it is this program becuase I just reformatted 2 or 3 weeks ago and this is the only new program I have that wasn’t one the computer before the reformat. I also launched the system restore and restored my computer to a point 3 days before I installed Avast! and had no problems. Then I undid the restore, and got the BSoD again upon shutdown. Don’t get me wrong I love this program. I had Norton before and all it did was cause me problems. BUT if anyone knows of anyway to get rid of this BSoD I’d appreciate it.

can you give us a hint at what system you are running and what software /operating system ,how much ram ,etc

The reason i ask about software is evident in this thread where people have experienced this action as a result of conflicts with firewall programs etc

Welcome to forums…

What did you did?
I had to remove NAV a long time ago…
Well, I survived untill now… I’m avast since then

  1. Please, browse the Symantec website and download the specific uninstall tool for NAV. It will clean trash left behing by NAV (files, registry keys). You need this to proper working with avast.

  2. On ‘Control’ in my signature you can download AEC and there is an option for Norton uninstall too.

  3. Can you try to repair your installation? Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).

  4. If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

  5. Can you reinstall Windows over your own installation?

  6. You can delete folders/files under either ‘Norton’ or ‘Symantec’ folder, the others under Liveupdate folders and ApplicationData…

  7. On Registry, well good Registry Cleaners could do some work.
But, for me, the only thing I would worry about is the VDD keys. You must have the following entry there:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswMonVd.dll

Can you post the contents of these Windows Registry keys in your system?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet004\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD

The computer has:

AMD Athlon 3000+ processor
160 GB Hard drive
512 DDR SDRAM
Windows XP Home Edition with all the updates including service pack 2

Ok, but did you try to get rid of Norton? ::slight_smile:

The first thing I did was uninstall Norton. Norton is gone.

XQueenOfPainX: I sent you an IM you should send me couple of the latest *.dmp files from your Windows\Minidump folder on my email (kurtin@asw.cz). Then I’d tell you more. Thanks.

I don’t see a minidump folder in my Windows folder. Is there anywhere else it would be? I did a search for the file as well and I am not getting any results. I do have logging turned on and it says the folder is at %systemroot%minidump, but I cannot find anything.

The folder is c:\windows\minidump
If you have XP installed on the C drive and in the folder Windows.

Make sure you have the creation of a minidump enabled.

I have the minidump creation enabled but there is no folder in my Windows folder or anywhere else for that fact with the name minidump and there are no files on my computer with the extension .dmp. I really wanna figure out why I’m getting this blue screen. ARGH!!!

Can you post the number and message into the BSOD?
If you Google that number (parts of it) you will be able to see a lot of correlate problems posted in the Web…

This is what the BSOD says:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If this is the first time you’ve seen this message…blah blah (it goes on for a paragraph or so)

STOP: 0x0000000A (0x00000ZCC, 0x000000FF, 0x00000000,0x804E3B58)

And that’s it. That’s exactly what it says every single time. I’ve
googled it many times and I cannot find any help. All I have found is that a Stop 0xA message means there is a software incompatability. Well I already knew that, but the things they say could be creating the BSoD, I do not have on my computer. Such as Roxio, I thought that was the prob at first but realized I haven’t installed it on this computer yet. Avast is the problem, I know for a fact, but I don’t know why.

You received this answer elsewhere: Go to http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm and read the 0A section. This error can have a wide variety of causes - it’s something of a ‘general’ error - but a checklist to work through and some specific articles there may help.

Did you found anything relevant?

Probably it’s Service Pack 2 which is causing the stop error when installed…
If you uninstall avast, the BSOD disappears too?

Yeah I looked at that and didn’t find anything relevant.

I don’t know if it’s service pack 2. I haven’t had any problems with it before. And I did a system restore to a point that was 3 days before I installed Avast! and I didn’t not get the BSOD. When I restored it back it’s current state, I got the BSOD again. And remember, this is ONLY happening at when I shutdown the computer. It will says “windows is saving your settings” and “windows is logging off” and when the screen goes black like it’s turning off, that’s when I get the BSOD.

What’s the driver’s name in BSOD ? aswTdi.sys ? I think it’s not - because there’re not much known bugs caused with the latest version.

The weird thing is there IS no driver name listed. What I posted earlier is EXACTLY what the BSOD says.

So there’s neither a \windows\minidump folder nor a file \windows\memory.dmp after the crash?

How much free disk space do you have on the system partition?

Thanks
Vlk

would it be worth checking the event viewer?

Was that a question? If so - then yes, the crash should’ve been logged to the Event log (System category). But the entry won’t contain much info either… to analyze the crash, a dump (at least a minidump) file would be needed…

Yeah there is no minidump folder or .dmo files anywhere on my computer. I don’t see anything in the event viewer about the crash. All there is is warnings about the internet and errors about a boot-start or system-start driver failing to load along with all the information logs. Oh and I have 138 GB free on my hard drive.
