Ok. Something went majorly wrong with my PC (not the one Im using to write this). On Sunday evening my dad went on to check his email and bank statment and was on the net for bout 30min. This evening, Monday, I went on to check MY email and listen to some music. Computer started normaly and got to the log on screen. After around 5 sec the PC restarted and went to the “Blue screen of death” telling me something is wrong with my PC. I didnt manage to read it all and find out what was wrong coz it restarted again and started to go to the log on screen. It did it again, so I restarted and booted in Safe Mode with CMD Prompt. I logged on and looked for the Avast folder and started the program. I scanned the usual areas where viruses hide, as I suspected its a virus, but it found nothing. I did a “Thorough Scan”= found nothing. I used the little cleaner thingy you can get from Avast= found nothing. I scheduled a boot scan= found nothing. I thought then that its all gd and maybe it was the Minidump crap playing up (as it happened before). So I started PC and logged onto myself, in normal mode, and after about 15sec the PC was flodded with viruses. The little yellow and blue bar in the bottom right corner was about half way up my screen showing all the viruses. The last time I was on PC, when it was OK, I used the ‘msconfig’ option, to change some of my start up settings, and as always a msg came up saying that I used it and it opened the box for it and in there I saw a file that wasnt there before, but I didnt manage to catch the name as it was flodded with viruses and the PC just froze, but it just loaded some file, I presume a virus. I managed to move some of the viruses into the chest but when it started to infect the ‘kernel32.dll’ and ‘shell32.dll’ files it all went mad, asked me for the Windows CD as some system files were removed, and eventualy PC had enough and went to the blue screen of death again. Now, when I boot up the PC, in whatever mode, it gets to the Windows loading screen, shows the blue screen for like a sec and restarts. I didnt manage to get any names of the viruses but I know they were all worms and viruses and maybe a trojan or two. I would REALLY appreciate any help anyone could provide me with this and I am sorry if this doesnt make sense or is hard to read/understand but I am seriously annoyed and am just typing and not thinking straight- its been a long day. If anyone wants more details or some more info plz post and ask or email me: dfibuch2001uk@hotmail.com . Any help greeatly appreciated. Thx guys.
Can’t you boot in Safe Mode of Windows (not cmd prompt) and check the Events (Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events) and see if you can post more info about the problem?
No, nothing works. Whether its safe mode or normal mode, it gets to the Windows loading screen (with the little green bar at the bottom) and just reboots, flashes the blue screen for a second and restarts, so…
Oops, the quote thing kinda went wrong on my previous post, so Im just gonna repost what I said, so that ppl dont get confused:

…no I cant do either of those, because it dissapears too fast and I cant get into the GUI interface it just stays in DOS all the time.
Is it possible to somehow copy the files off my HDD onto another one? I have a spare PC, with a 10GB HDD, and a spare IDE cable so I could connect my HDD and copy the files, but I dunno whether it’ll infect it or not, or if its gonna be visible or whatever. I have 2 OS’s installed on my spare HDD= WIN 98 and WIN XP. Is it possible to do the back up using WIN 98, to see the other HDD, coz XP takes up more space and I need the GB’s :-p
Maybe it’s possible to choose an option to ‘disable’ automatic restarting, then rather then disapears and starts again, you’ll get the blue screen with the error message.
It’s possible to copy the files if you can ‘see’ the XP partition from Windows 98.
Do you have XP in a NTFS partition or in a FAT32 one?
You can save your files (backup) and worry about virus later, as they could be cleaned. The best will be only saving your data (documents, etc.) and not the programs or system files. Maybe reinstalling will be better and easier.
I think it is a NTFS partition, so I guess you wont be able to see it. So what your saying is to just connect the HDD to my other PC, copy the documents that I need, etc, and then just wipe the whole HDD and reinstall? That is a possibility. My friend said he’s dad can fix stuff like that so Im gonna wait a bit, see what he says and if he cant do anything bout it then I’ll do this. I av access to the Internet so its ok, and I have my files backed up- I just want my PC to work again :-p
If you’re using XP, press F8 key while booting and you’ll have an option for that, at least I have it…
If you could boot, you can change this with Control Panel > System > Avanced > Initialization
If the second computer has a resident, active, antivirus, you can copy your files.
When I boot and press F8, I gt all the options of boot: Safe Mode, Safe mode with networking, etc. What do I choose from there? Where do I go? U want me to boot up somewhow, log in, go to control pannel and look for that stuff? I checked on my laptop and I dont have it. On both, I have Win XP Home Edition. I cant see it.
Im gonna install Avast! on it in that case, to protect it, and use Win XP, ye?
Nop, it still goes crappy. When you select this option and see all the drivers and dll’s loading, etc, on my PC it freezes and restarts. Its like its got a timer to restart each time its turned on, whatever option it boots in. Myabe its gone into the BIOS and infected hardware, but I dont think there are things like that yet, are there?..
Thats the prob, I av HE. Had Pro but I had to wipe my PC clean 2 yrs ago, coz of a virus (before I used Avast! 8))
Each time it detects an error so this is why that option could be disabled, i.e., you can disable the automatic restart after a crash.
Bios could have some ‘extrange’ setting, but not infected… Maybe you can choose the ‘default’ or ‘suggested’ values for the Bios. Generally the last tab of settings has these possibilities.
Man…this is some complicated stuff. I do programming at college and know quite a bit bout computers but I aint gonna mess with BIOS lol. My friends dad said he’ll fix it for me, on Monday, so till then Im not gonna do anything, except maybe back up the data. Thx for your help Tech. I’ll let u know whats happening.
Would getting some of the .dmp files from the /minidump folder help to identify what kind of error it is? Because as you know I cant see the blue screen of death coz it restarts, but woud getting those files help?
Please check the folder \data\log
Are there any files called unpXXXX there (where XXXX is a random number)?
If so, send them to vlk@avast.com
They may contain more information about the problem (maybe a link to this thread).
Go to folder \windows\minidump and send the newest (recent) .mdmp files for analysis.
Better if you can compress (zip) them and add some information about the BSOD and the link for this thread.
Send an email to Vlk or upload the file to ftp://ftp.asw.cz/incoming
BSOD? So you want the files from /log and any unpXXXX files, the recent .mdmp files in a ZIP and the link to this thread sent to the email u gave me? Sure I would really appreciate it if you could have a look and tell me whats going on. How long would analysing the files take? I just want to know coz my dad is pushing me to repair the PC but I cant find a solution. I’ll do it as soon as I get home- at college atm, but I’ll be home in like 30min.
I did it… But analysing dump files isn’t a quick work…
I did it.
But, look, generally, I’d rather the user get help here in forum than using IM.
It’s easier, more users can help at the same time, etc.
