Blue Screen of Death

Using Win7 64bit. Get BSOD when I attempt to update Avast AV Free. Thought first time was a fluke. 2nd time, definitely not. Anyone know what’s going on?

  • OS…?? - which SP…?
  • Other security related software installed…??

What is the exact message on the bsod?
What exact version of avast do you currently have installed?
How are you trying to update? (build in updater, downloaded the latest version, using the online installer?)

Same problem with the AVAST!_FREE_ANTIVIRUS on WinXP SP3
Update avast via the update program option and after reboot i got BSOD with
0x00000050 (0xa8951000, 0x00000001, 0x8058265f, 0x00000000)

In Safe Mode i try to deinstall and all worked fine.
After reinstall the latest kit from avast download site with version 9.0.2011.263 i get the same error.
Deinstalling again and all worked fine.

  1. Download Avastclear, Rejzors uninstall tool and the appropriate Avast program edition

Note : You need to be ONLINE during the install (sometimes online installer works whereas offline doesn’t)

Avastclear : http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe
Rejzors Uninstall tool: http://rejzor.wordpress.com/avast-cleanup-tool/

  1. Uninstall Avast by control panel [If you don’t have Avast in control Panel go to #4]
  2. Uninstall in safe mode using Avastclear.
  3. Run Rejzors Uninstall Utility in Normal Mode (removes traces avastclear doesn’t) - reboot.
  4. Install the version you downloaded.
  5. Reboot.

All done before. with Revo Uninstaller and CCleaner and a Registry search by hand. Same probs.
Don´t wanna use Avastclear or any other hints for re-/deinstalling your software. I only wanna use the tool without any blue screens and any “engineering” works, sorry.

Is an older Version available for download instead of using another Antivirus-SW?

freewindf, if you don’t want to follow instructions…
You are on your own and don’t complain about problems.

Eddy, I don´t wanna fight here, but I figured out that I use XP 32x!
The avast! Cleanup Tool is for - Windows Vista/Win7/Win8 32bit and 64bit
A question on the site after XP from Nov 01 is´nt answered. And I don´t need anymore trouble with your tools.
All other hints from you was done without using your cleanup tool without success.
Also I´m right that avastclear.exe is the Rejzors Uninstall Utility ? So did you mean to run the tool twice first in safe mode and in normal mode again?

And btw: I´m not complain about problems, I tell you that YOUR software is´nt run problem free!
Sorry for that!

No problems here on XP.

  • Which avast!..?? (Free/Pro/IS/Premier)
  • Which version…??
  • OS…?? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP…?)
  • Other security related software installed…??
  • Which AV(s) did you use before avast!..??

No probs with what on XP? Avast or the cleaner?

  • Which avast!..?? - As I figured out I use AVAST!_FREE_ANTIVIRUS on WinXP SP3
  • Which version…?? - The current one as I figured out 9.0.2011.263
  • OS…?? - As I… WinXP SP3 32x
  • Other security related software installed…?? - Zonealarm Version: 12.0.104.000
  • Which AV(s) did you use before avast!..?? - Symantec / Norton Internet Sec. 2006

Both.

First, drop ZA…!!
Then:

  1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

Using XP/sp3 32 bit on one of my system and there is no problem at all.
Not with avast (2014.9.0.2011), not with avastclear.
It would not surprise me if remnants of Symantec or ZA is the culprit.

Sorry, bad luck guys.

Done as recommended.
Installation runs fine, setup runs fine. All without ZA, no probs.
Reboot with ZA enabled system crashed as before.

Please do not recommend to disable ZA. Have in mind that Avast runs fine before the update.

@Eddy: It would not surprise me if remnants of Symantec or ZA is the culprit.
I did not believe that parts of Symantec or ZA would cause the probs. As I mentioned before, the latest Avast runs fine.

So far my question again: Is the older version (last before the update) anywhere available for download?
Better an older but running version than nothing. And better the one before instead of another product.

Installation runs fine, setup runs fine. All without ZA, no probs.
No need to use a older version (and have lesser protection). You may not even ZA. Many modems/routers already have a build in hardware firewall. Check if yours has one. If it has, there is no need for a software firewall.

This is right, but HW-FW in routers are most likly filtering incoming traffic and let outgoing through. This is were SW-FW came in place. You allow or disallow the traffic going outside. So both FW-models have there right.
I always use both.

But ZA is not the problem, it is Avast´s new version as stated earlier here. So I wanna use the latest before until an update is made even it has less protection.

To hell with you! ;D I am tired to try launch my STRIFE game as a beta tester, even though i tried to setup file shield exclusions and restart file shield, while i do this manipulations AVAST freeze my system till i hard reset my PC. It is not a better way to release such unstable software like that second build, even more i am probably saw most crude version of this anti virus solution. The cost of loading windows with it is too high, system start up are slowed down by a huge amount of time, network lags (even though you rewrite old buggy Internet shield) NDIS wrapper or some other software driver which installed on my system with AVAST distribution is still poor. When i am navigating through setup menus AVAST often freeze, last freeze as i intended to write forced me to hard reset my PC. So i decided to remove AVAST Internet Security for a while and stay with Windows Defender+Windows Firewall+pfsense free bsd based distribution on my firewall small mini-ITX PC. Like a comodo IS premium or Avast IS it is a huge performance impact of using 3rd party AV programs compared to a simple windows default protection settings. At least i can launch my strife game which is in beta testing for now. Hopefully you coming soon with new build that can address this annoying issues, but i starting thinking about there is so many of them especially in the new interface that my hope it’s just dying.

I using Malwarebytes Antimalware as a second design for cleaning my PC with Hitman Pro solution.

Really i wont risk my system now till the holidays are coming and i need my PC fully uptime and working for me…it would be even more risky to setup AVAST IS trial when such a problems like this are being reported by users whose used last build of the program. It is sad…winter time sadness :stuck_out_tongue:

Well some guys on the internet raised topic with 5 reasons to do not use 3rd. party software firewalls rather then using default windows firewall and it’s all up to users, but i found that windows common protection is the best solution for me write now since it has best integration on the system level.

There are options when it comes to third party firewalls.
