Blue screen while autoupdating and gaming

Hello,
I have Avast free 6.0.1125. This happens for a second time - when I play games or do something else very demanding and the antivirus tries to update itself I get blue screen. Windows 7 64bit, latest vga drivers, Core2 Duo. I know that it tries to update and it is related, because every time when I restart Avast tells me that an update has failed and when I try to update it manually it says the package is broken. The same goes for program update.

During the blue screen it “dumps memory to file” or something like that. I found the minidump with the current date and the one from the last blue screen, but they are 267KB and the forum doesn’t allow me to attach them. So I archived them and this is the external link:

Upload your minidump here: ftp.avast.com/incoming

Done!

Btw, did you have game-mode enabled…?

I don’t remember. Now it is disabled, but usually it is on…

Turn it on and see if the problem is solved.

Well, since it happens every week or two, it will be difficult to determine if the problem is fixed. In gaming mode Avast still says “Last encountered error: the package is broken” when I try to update it.

Latest VPS is 110619-1
Do you have this…?

I don’t know what this means.

Open the avast GUI, you’ll find it there.

If you mean virus definitions version - it is not the latest 110619-1. When I try to update it, I get the message: “Last encountered error: the package is broken”. Same goes for the program update. I restarted the PC again, but it didn’t help. My current version is 110619-0.

Btw thank you for trying to help me! I didn’t expect such fast response.

  1. Download an run this: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/vpsupd.exe
  2. NP, no time to lose.

It said the vps is already up to date, but I still can’t update the definitions.

Try a repair of avast:
XP - Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

Vista, win7 - Control Panel, Programs & Features, uninstall a program, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

You may need to reboot after the repair. This has in the past resolved this out of sync issue between reported and actual VPS version.

this is a bug in aswsp.sys driver
it will be fixed in next program update (this week)

Well, I hope the bluescreen issue will be fixed, too

Sure. See Reply #14…!

I thought it was for the update issue.
Anyway, thank you very much. I’м lookинг forward to the fix

  1. No, it’s a reply regarding your BSOD.
  2. You’re welcome…!

Has this bug been fixed? Because I was just having the issue myself a couple of times this week. I was playing The Sims 3 and when Avast would try to update, I’d get the Blue Screen o’ Death. And when I’d try to update it, it would tell me the package was broken. I uninstalled the program, rebooted, downloaded the newest one and installed it. Should that fix it? Because I’ve had to redo stuff TWICE now on my game and it’s involved and time consuming and it’s annoying the crap outta me! =(
