Some friends have a Dell Inspiron 570 desktop, running Win10. They only had Win Defender. I suggested they try Avast Free, and then “we” decided they should at least spend $20 to upgrade to Internet Security. Now they get at least one bluescreen (BSOD) crash and reboot per day. Some friend I am! I have ensured they have updated BIOS (only one behind, and the latest is from 2012). I have looked at Device Manager (nothing new added, nothing looks amiss). I have looked at all of their apps…I don’t see anything odd or suspicious. Granted…there is obviously a conflict somewhere. I have did the Win10 update 1607, and tried to do Win update 1609. 1609 won’t apply, because Win10 says TrendMicro 2007 is loaded and must be manually removed. But…it isn’t, and never has been, loaded. I even dloaded the TrendMicro removal tool and ran it just to see if that would help. I have reviewed eventvwr logs, but dont’ see anything helpful. If they allow me to continue, I will likely do the one remaining BIOS update, and also un-install/re-install Avast. That’s all I can think of.
The BSOD incidents are random, so it’s hard to troubleshoot (like booting into safe mode and …waiting).
Also, the “Scheduled” scans do not run as scheduled. They could come early, or late. My friends are ready to kiss their $20 goodbye and move on to something else.
Thoughts welcomed! Thank you.
