Bogus warning messages from avast! How to coexist?

Apropos http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=9578.0 (How impportant is it to completely remove Norton?):
Ok, so I have bought several avast licenses, for computers with Norton SystemWorks 2006 on them. I want to disable the AV and LiveUpdate parts of the Norton product, but still use the rest of the package - e.g. GoBack is quite useful. So, I did disable the AV and LiveUpdate parts of the Norton product, but avast puts up this bogus message, which says in part
“The on-access scanner module of this program and the on-access scanner of avast! CANNOT be active at the same time.
As a result, the avast! main on access scanners - Standard Shield, P2P Shield, and Instant Messaging Shield - were disabled.”

So there are three issues.
1)Avast! reports (after opening the avast toobar icon) that resident (ie on-access) protection IS active.
2)I have disabled Norton’s on-access scanner.
3)How do I get these packages to coexist? And yes, I see that I can go through the effort to completely uninstall all of SystemWorks…

FYI: These boxes are running NSW 2006 on W2K Pro or XP Pro.

edit…: Oh, I did try disabling the VXD and all Norton-related services; that didn’t work. I’m trying an Add/Remove CHANGE of Norton: remove the AV component; we’ll see if that helps.

Surprise, surprise - it worked! I need to be more optimistic ;D

Now search your drive(s) for Norton and Symantec and see what you find.

Then do the same with the registry.

Your suggestion doesn’t make sense given my expressed goal; why would I want to do that?

Because Norton remains could mess now or in the future, avast or other security programs, even Windows Security Center…
If I were you, I’ll run Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista and clean your system.

By the way, disable is not enough when you’re talking about antivirus and firewalls…
