bone to pick with avast

why do avast! Internet Security users receive priority virus and program updates (up to four times faster than our free antivirus)?

i mean sure they paid, and for that they get additional features and protection, but it shouldnt mean
that avast! free users get priority updates up to 4 times slower, putting them at risk for the duration.

of course i dont know where avast pro users stand, are they like ais in update speed,or avast free,or maybe somewhere in between?

avast! Internet Security is our most complete and comprehensive security package. It gives you the most sophisticated online protection available and receives priority virus and program updates (up to four times faster than our free antivirus).

That only means that you can set the time between automatic updates lower, than in the free version.

you mean the time between automatic update attempts?
that doesnt seem to be true, even in free version you can set interval as low or high as you want.

  1. Yep.
  2. Sure you can set it, but it wouldn’t work.
The default for the free version is 240 minutes, but you can set it as low as 120 minutes. Everything lower will bring up the default setting again.

It’s not slower. The difference is on the limit of automatic updates.
The minimum intervals currently are like this:
Free AV: 120 minutes ( = 2 hours)
Pro AV, IS: 15 minutes

I doubt the risk is much greater for the up to two more per day updates. On the other side if it, I think the product is worth paying for so I do expect more than the free version–though I don’t think it matters all that much 99% of the time.

You get all updates with the free version as well.

Awesome avatar Asyn! :o

Gone soon.

To bad it’s cool.

cmon paid users should get some extras like features and more frequent updates since we are paying for the services, i have 12 paid lic’s all good till 2016 i expect to get something extra for my money i spent. though you may not feel the same

If you’re willing to pay for the product, you should certainly get something extra and you do.
If you use the free version, you’re saving some money and still get more than you do with other
free AV’s. I have no clue why alpha1 has a gripe ??? I certainly don’t and I’m very happy to be getting
all this protection for FREE.

Hi alpha1,

Why do you complain? Get an update eealier, you could also get a FP earlier and you’d have to wait longer for it to be repaired. You always can look at the cup half full and half empty. Be glad a product like avast cannot be found elsewhere, and you are the one that has it on that machine of yours,

The OP was complaining because he/she misunderstood avast!'s “4 times faster” wording. The OP thought that if AIS users received an update at say 1:00pm, then free users wouldn’t receive it till 5:00pm. That’s all.

I have 5 paid licenses and I agree.

as i stated in my op,those who purchase a license do get extras,e.g: safezone, firewall,on demand sandbox,anti-spam,anti-phishing,etc.
now,i’m not the kind of person who sets his auto update to under 240 minutes, but i do believe that in this respect, there shouldnt be any discrimination between free and paid users,so if a free user wished to set his/her setting to under 120 minutes,he/she should be able to do so.
i haven’t used other AVs recently, but i do believe that other(at least some?) free AVs dont differentiate between free and paid in this regard.

Sorry to burst your bubble but many free AVs discriminate, to the point that they only allow you to update once a day. Even worse many free AV options are also crippled compared to the paid version as far as functionality goes, which I consider more severe than update checking frequency.

The whole point here is this is a restriction in the frequency of checking, not the frequency of updating.

Avast generally releases two updates per day, sometimes three, though I have had as many as five in a day (all with the free version). So checking frequently is unlikely to be that beneficial.

I have no problem with a two hour checking restriction at all in the free version when you also consider what you are getting for free. For years the greatest competitor to avast pro as far as I’m compared is avast free as functionally it is very close to the Pro version and isn’t crippled.

So if you don’t like this restriction feel free to take your business to another free AV.

It is just or more important to keep your Windows OS, Adbobe programs like Flash and Java updated and they only update usually once a month though all three have been known to do small security updates more frequently like every two weeks.

I wouldn’t worry about a getting avast! updates a little slower with the free versions.

People who pay should get better treatment. That is how it works in life. A waiter will give you preferential service if you are regular big tipper at a restaurant rather than an occasional customer or even regular customer who never tips. That is how life works.

at first(op),i didnt understand what “up to 4 times faster” meant, but thannks to asyn and tech,i got it,the previous(last) post was more of a suggestion rather than a complain,as i made clear that i dont change the default setting of 240 minutes(which is double the minimum for the free version).
either way,no need to get hostile or defensive.

Hey alpha1, I don’t understand your beef? It’s the protection that’s important. I have a license for AIS but use the free version and the frequency of def. updates are not a concern. Did you “know” that each definition can and will detect far more viruses, spyware, trojans and malware than advertised? It’s called “code emulation”! And I’m glad avast uses it. So two updates per day is plenty for me. ;D
