I am a new user of Avast Free Home edition. So far I like it very much, but I have one question:
When I first installed it and rebooted it ran a full system scan on boot-up. This is one of the main features that induced me to try Avast. On the web page listing features of the Home edition, it was stated that boot scan was one of the features of the Home edition.
What I find is that the boot scan was performed on the first re-boot, but has not been repeated on subsequent re-boots. Is this the way Home edition is designed, i.e., a first-time only scan to whet one’s appetite as inducement to upgrade to the paid version?
Or am I missing some step to enable a Home edition boot-scan on every boot-up — maybe some work around procedure to enable repeated boot-up scans of the entire hard drive?
Any clarification on this issue would be much appreciated.
The boot-time scan is there for a specific purpose, initial scan and to deal with viruses that otherwise couldn’t be dealt with because they are either in use or in the systems folders and effectively protected by windows.
The boot-time is time consuming and not something you would want to do on every boot, unless you have something that requires it to be carried out.
It is a one time selection, if you need it you select it or in certain cases of infected file in memory avast will offer it as an option.
As David said, the boot-time scan is done on install to insure as clean a computer as possible at the beginning use of avast. It is not needed with each boot of the computer. Boot scan is for when there is an infection that is being “protected” by Windows. So, a boot-time scan runs before Windows is loaded and therefore not protecting an infection.
If you would like to schedule a boot-time scan because of a specific need, right click the “a” ball in the Task tray, click on Start avast! Antivirus, when the user interface opens, access the menu or right click somewhere on the interface, select Schedule boot-time scan … , follow directions. The boot-time scan will activate on the next boot of your computer. You will need to do this each time you want to do a boot scan.
If I remember correctly, the paid version works the same way. It is not an attempt to induce anyone to buy the paid version. There is no need for a boot scan on each boot and, as David said, it is time consuming.
I hope this helps you.
Please come back often, learn more, and maybe help others.
It’s by design: only at the first boot it is ‘automated’. The next ones you must ask for it (both in Home and Pro version). It’s not a difference to appetite the Pro
I’m new here, but I have also a question about the boot-time scan facility. I’ve a x64 System and want to fire a manual boot-scan. I took a look, because I’ve installed Avast Home (German version) on many x86 systems for friends, but I didn’t find a way to enable the boot scan. The menu entry in the simple user interface “Settings->Scan at Boottime (or similar)” is not clickable (Grey).
Maybe someone can help me to solve the problem.
The environment:
Avast 4.7
Build Jun2006 (4.7.844)
WinXP 64Bit
