Boot-time scan errors.

I tried to schedule a boot-time scan for my PC this morning, and it prompted me to restart my computer so I said OK. Well my computer re-booted but no scan occurred. I tried three more times and still no scan on startup. Finally on a fifth attempt the boot-time scan screen appeared, but it gave me a weird error message.

Is there anything that I can do to fix this problem?

You could try an Avast repair?
You must be online to do this!
Start/Control Panel/Add Remove Programs/ Select Avast (Change Remove) in th popup box scroll to and select Repair.
Reboot. Then re-try your boot time scan.

I followed your instructions to repair my avast installation and it was completed successfully, so I scheduled another boot-time scan for my computer. This time it gave me an “unhandled exception error”. I have no idea what it could mean.

Hello newbie here

I’ve been using Advast for over a year and now suddenly I’m experiencing this ‘unhandled exception error’ problem :-[

A program update should be released soon (in a week maybe) that will hopefully solve the problems.

Getting the same here today: ‘Unhandled Exception…blah blah’ and then into Windows boot… (Avast Home)

Thanks! Hopefully this will end these problems. Thank you for all of your help everyone!

… and I thought I was the only one with this issue!

I thought it might be something wrong with my WinXP installation.

Apparently, this was once an issue back in 2003 as reported here:

http://www.technologyvault.co.uk/news/Archives/1/4-2003.shtml

(search for Avast anti-virus Bug Alert! on that page)

Well, this is very reassuring. I was nervous about this error, and I’m glad that I’m not the only one. And also the fact that others experienced this error as of yesterday (which is when i first experienced this error, i tried it again today and got the same error) reassures me that its just a software update problem. I’m glad to hear an update will be posted soon.

Was there ever an update addressing this issue?

Yes it was corrected in a VPS update and then it promptly got broken again but another VPS corrected that (and the boot-time scan should be working with the current VPS), whilst the program update was worked on, a beta version is currently being tested 4.7.1238 and should be released soon.

Here’s another boot time error:

When I tell it to do a boot scan, it will start normally and scan normally up to a certain point. This point seems to be random. Then, I get the Windows screen telling me that boot did not start normally, so would I like to start normally, start with last known config, or start in safe mode? :-\ This is very frustrating as this is the new version of the program. The previous version I got the memory error that others reported. I’ve been using this product for about a year now and have only bumped into problems with it over the last month or so.

Any ideas on how to fix this? I’m running XP w/SP2 and all my updates are current.

Oh, if I just restart my computer or turn it off/on normally there’s no problem at all. This ONLY occurs when I’m trying to do a boot time scan.

You say you have the latest version (which is 4.7.1043), but you don’t say what that version is.

Where did you install avast, did you choose the default location ("C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4") or a different one ?
If you didn’t use the default, try that on your reinstall.

I would suggest you do a clean reinstall of avast.
Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.

Now uninstall, reboot, run the uninstall utility, reboot install the latest version, reboot.

Yes, the version number you mention is the version I have. It updated itself a couple of days ago, so…

I’ll try the reinstall later and let you know how it works.

No problem, welcome to the forums.

If you’re using the last version and still have a problem… I should test it on XP and Vista to see if I have it too… I’ll do it in a few minutes.

I did the uninstall/reboot/reinstall sequence that was recommended and now it works fine. So I don’t know what happened to it to cause it to malfunction. shrug

Thanks, though!

Glad to know.
My boot time scanning is working too.
