Boot Time Scan vs Normal Scan

I have been using Avast Antivirus Home Edition for a few years now, and up to now, I had no reason to complain.

But latetly, a bug might have slipped by and it infected all the exe files on my drives.

So I formatted my C drive, re-stalled Windows Home (SP3), installed all the latest Windows updates and then installed Avast. After installation, it asked me if I would like to perform a boot time scan and of course, I said ‘yes’.

It did the boot time scan on my C and D drives and did not find any infections (see attached log file).

But after the boot-up was complete, my computer lit up like a Christmas tree. Avast started giving an infection warning for all my exe files on D drive. Then of course, I formatted my D drive too.

So, my question is: What is the significance of a boot-time scan, if Avast is not going to catch any infections? It is as good as a waste of time.

This happened only today. I don’t know if there was a critical update today, which happened only after my computer fully booted up. An understanding of this ‘boot-time scan’ will be helpful.

Regards.

hi Bazza Boy
boot time scan is very good to detect and remove ROOTKITS,trojans ,…but in the beta forum we discuss avast disinfecting ability so that is the story maybe happen with your pc:“it happen to my friend too”
1.your pc has a file infecter virus
2.you format c: and install your program and you dont yet has a security program
3.may be you wanted to listen to music and you go to d:
4.d: has the file on it and it is hidden from your view “you dont make a system settings for you yet”
5.the virus run and you dont know
6.avast boot time scan may be affected by the virus and dont work good
so the solutions is:
1.empty tour temps folders
2.run dr.web scan"it will cure files not delete them or remove them"
3.reinstall avast
4.update avast
5.have a good day and listen to the music
this problem happen so much a lot of people format c: reinstall windows then enter d: and get the infection so dont be sad

Thanks superhacker,

There are Temp folders all over the C Drive. Which Temp folders do you recommend I empty? Please let me know.

Then, I’ll do the scan and let you know what happens. You seem to know what you are doing.

[font=Segoe UI]Boot Time Scan - This allows the antivirus engine to scan all of the files on your hard drive before any other programs load - useful in cases where you have an infection which cannot be cleaned because the “file is in use”.

TEMP files are just temporary and not crucial. You may delete its contents safely via: Windows Key+R > type: cleanmgr > Place a check beside Temporary files > Click OK.

NOTE: Some viruses disguise themselves as folders so, it would be best to scan suspicious TEMP folders / contents.

avast! and other AVs will not be able to offer 100% total protection, so we recommend using other softwares that would be of mutual help with avast. Examples would be:
[] Malwarebytes Antimalware
[
] SUPERantiSpyware

Hi Bazza Boy,

Actually avast antivirus provided these features like : Boot time scan, Desktop Scan, Memory Scan to protect avast user from virus/malware infected which could attacked with various ways.

From your case, my assume that your have a file or application which contains anomaly behavior, so that is way avast detected it as malware.

And if boot time scan couldn’t detect virus/malware, my assume is you didn’t infected by boot sector virus.

Well, I’m back.

Dr. Web scans only one file at a time. If I scan all the executable files on my D drive one-by-one, I will reach my second childhood and probably take a trip to the mental asylum.

So, I did a Trend Micro Housecall instead and found no problems with my computer. So, it looks like all is well.

But it still does not answer my questions satisfactorily: Why does Avast scan all the files during a boot-time scan, when it can’t catch the virus? and When it does catch the viruses during a normal scan (when Windows is running), what does it do differently?

In view of the above, is Avast a dependable antivirus software?

Why does Avast scan all the files during a boot-time scan, when it can't catch the virus? and When it does catch the viruses during a normal scan (when Windows is running), what does it do differently?

Different scanning methods detects different viruses in a different approach. Let’s say, a rootkit would be (in most cases) best scanned using Boot time Scan than a normal scan since rootkits are commonly active and can’t be moved/deleted while a PUP would be (in most cases) detected better using normal scan than Boot Time Scan since the unwanted program has not initiated yet while the computer is in Boot Time.

Avast is dependable. Reliable.
