Hi,
Performing a boot time scan works for a while but then the screen goes blank.
It’s like it has gone into standby mode. But it doesn’t come back pressing a key , like 7 or Esc.
In fact Ctrl-Alt-Del will not work either. It only recovers booting after a hard reset.
This is not the same problem of booting to a black screen. I see and answer the scan prompts for a few minutes but then it goes blank and I get no response anymore.
I seem to have developed a repulse for Windows 8 and anything that looks like it.
When avast 8 was released, after studying the change log it came across that the main changes were cosmetic. Plus it seemed to push me for an upgrade to Internet Security and I’m only interested in the anti-virus.
I could be persuaded to upgrade but not right now. Now I’m in the middle of a virus infection and boot time scan crashing/sleeping does not help.
My infection problem seems to be resolved but this problem persists.
First I tought it could be display driver related but it looks like the boot time scan is crashing when analysing some particular object(s). Can’t pinpoint which one it is.
Regular scan works fine and sees no threat when scanning the same directories/area where boot time scan crashes.
I will update avast engine to v8, see if it has the same problem and report back here.
Thank you.
So, the update to v8.0.1497 did not fix this issue.
Computer apparently goes to sleep/crashes at about (this time) 4% complete.
I don’t know if this is something to do with a “turn off display” setting somewhere or if avast is crashing.
After loosing the image I press Esc … , press Ctrl-Alt-Del … , press the hardware reset button on the tower case with no result.
I then turn off and on the UPS, turn the computer on, it offers to repair or start normally (selected) and it then boots.
How do I debug this?
Does Boot Time Scan produce a log to see when/what it was doing?
Disable both windows sleep/hybernation functions as well as in the bios (if it has such a option there)
The log files are in:
Win 7 : Boot time scan log located at C:/Program Data/Avast Software/Avast/Report/aswBoot.txt
XP : Documnets and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVAST Software\Avast\report\aswBoot.txt
I have confirmed that this is not an Avast issue:
If I enter BIOS setup and leave it there for a handful of minutes the screen goes blank and the keyboard (USB) unresponsive.
Still I ask that you help if you can.
Attached is an image of my BIOS Power Management setup. What can be disabled/changed here?
I wouldn’t mind it to be a temporary BIOS setup just so it can do a boot time scan.
There are 3 settings under “Suspend Mode”: auto, S1 only and S3 only.
Tried all 3 with the same result: blank screen after approximately 6 minutes.
Tried altering “Repost Video On S3 Resume” to on… also failed.
@essexboy: yes I’m using High Performance profile set to never turn off the monitor and HD. But I think Windows doesn’t even come into play. These last tests I didn’t even leave the BIOS setup screens. Waited for it to blank looking at the system clock
This looks like a hardware issue
I believe that too. And I cannot guarantee that it's ever behaved different. This machine is little over 1 yo and I don't remember ever doing a boot time scan (bts) on it :-[
@Eddy: Dust? What are you thinking about? Overheating? I suppose it could be a little dusty inside. I'll clean it!
Thank you for the help and suggestions. By this time I’m starting to think of a workaround. Maybe I can boot from a CD and scan from there, then again maybe I’ll have the same problem. At least Windows works and I think it’s virus free so… let it be? :-\
Yes, it sure can be overheating. When cleaning, don’t forget to take out and open the psu to remove the dust from inside there too.
Also remove all cards, ram modules and such so you can clean the slots they are in properly.
If this doesn’t solve the problem, at least the case is clean and we have ruled out a possible cause for the problem
