Both Avast and Defender????

Hi guys.
I just upgraded from Windows7 to Windows10 and everything went smooth and fine, without a hitch.
Though I totally forgot to uninstall my anti-virus prior to installation.
Now my PC seems to have both Windows defender and Avast running at the same time.
Are they both active?
Should I uninstall/disable one of them?
Running 2 antiviruses at the same doesn’t sound good to me, as it could impact performance.
This question has probably already come up but I could’t find a precisely dedicated thread.

Personally I would disable ‘Defender’ and do a Repair of your avast installation just to be sure there were no corrupted files in your Avast installation (Due to your W10 upgrade).
For a Repair go to Control Panel/Programs&Features/Avast and click Uninstall/Change. The Avast installation options screen will appear, scroll up/down and choose “REPAIR”.
Be sure to reboot after the process is complete.

Defender should have disabled itself once detecting Avast was installed, I’d be more inclined to do a clean install of Avast if all this is caused by upgrading to Win10.

“Note” Defender cant be uninstalled as it’s part of the OS in Win8 and 10

Agreed, however I personally always try the Repair first as most often it has resolved my issues in the past.
If not, then I do a Clean Install.
Either way, the problem should resolve.

+1 for that. I’ve taken multiple shots at removing defender, and I still haven’t gotten rid of it yet. -_- >:(

With Defender being embedded into so many areas of the system I wouldn’t risk trying to remove it, you’d only be asking for troubles.

Thanks for all your useful replies guys.
What I finally did

  • disabling windows defender through group policy
  • repair avast from uninstall programs
(Still got windows defender and windows defender network services running in automatic and manual mode. Status greyed out )

Windows Defender (WD) has been an integral part of the OS installation since windows 7. The only option is to disable it.

The major difference in WD being only an anti-spyware in windows 7, but a full anti-virus in win8.x and win10 and the OS is meant to recognise the installation of your own AV and disable WD.

Let us know if you have any further issues.
