Botnets operating via IRC

Dear Avast Forum,

For a botnet which operates via IRC, does one have to have an IRC client (eg. MIRC) installed for a computer infected with such a trojan or other program to function in the botnet?

Can a computer become infected with an ‘IRC-botnet’ trojan or progran if one doesn’t have an IRC client installed?

My question relates to this (rather old) link: http://www.infoworld.com/article/04/09/10/HNzombienetwork_1.html

Thanks,

Just a guess on my part but I suppose if such a trojan was successful at getting on a computer, it could download an IRC client to make that computer part of a botnet. Trojans, worms, etc might even have an IRC client “built-in” it’s software.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.
